MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY: 'Real Time with Bill Maher' host Bill Maher criticized former Defense Secretary Mark Esper for refusing to support President Joe Biden in the upcoming election despite previously labeling former President Donald Trump as a "threat to democracy".

Esper, along with several other former Donald Trump officials, has been vocal about their opposition to Trump's potential reelection in 2024.

He cautioned that if Trump were to win a second term, it would likely resemble the tumultuous final year of his first term.

Mark Esper struggles to commit to voting for Biden

On the Friday, March 29, episode of 'Real Time with Bill Maher', in flow of the conversation, Esper expressed concerns about the prioritization of loyalty to Trump over loyalty to the Constitution among individuals entering the administration.

"So you'll vote for Biden?" Maher asked.

Esper, visibly uncomfortable, struggled to respond, leaving Maher exasperated.

After some hesitation, Esper admitted, "I'm not there yet. I'm definitely not voting for Trump, but I'm not there yet."

Maher expressed confusion, stating, "This you'll have to explain to me, sir. I really respect you so much... but I just don't understand smart people who don't get binary. Binary."

Esper acknowledged Maher's point, saying, "I understand." He suggested the option of not voting, to which Maher pressed, "How could you not be there after what you just said?"

"There's no way I will vote for Trump, but every day that Trump does something crazy, the door to voting for Biden opens a little bit more. And that's where I'm at," Esper clarified.

"That's a slow-opening door," Maher quipped in response.

Esper later expressed agreement with the comments made by ex-GOP Rep Liz Cheney, who argued that the country "can survive bad policy" under Biden but "can't survive a president who is willing to torch the Constitution".

Internet reacts to Bill Maher's interview with Mark Esper

Following Bill Maher's impassioned monologue on 'Real Time with Bill Maher', social media exploded with activity as users from all corners of the internet chimed in with their reactions.

One person tweeted, "I thought nothing was binary. We live on the spectrum."

"Trump’s Vice President: “I can’t in good conscience support Trump for President” Trump’s Chief of Staff: “The depth of Trump’s dishonesty is astonishing” These are people who know him best & held back in their comments How in the world does anyone justify voting for Trump," another person tweeted.

"Maher is a Legend in his own mind. Full of hot air," another person took note of the host.

"Bill Maher's like a stoner always doing the oh cool or wow man," said another person.

"Bill Maher is a partisan lowlife who has been trying to cover with what he thinks are "fair and balanced observations," said another person.
