Luis M Huesca: Off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed in brutal carjacking
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Luis M Huesca, a dedicated member of the Chicago Police Department, tragically lost his life in a brutal carjacking.
The 30-year-old officer was fatally shot in the Gage Park neighborhood in the early morning of Sunday, April 21, while on his way home from work, according to authorities.
Responding to a "gunshot detection" alert on South Kedzie Avenue just before 3 am, officials discovered Huesca, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the University of Chicago Medical Center.
No suspect has been identified in Luis M Huesca's shooting death
Huesca, who had served the Chicago Police for six years, died just two days before his 31st birthday. No suspects have been identified and the motive behind the shooting remains unknown.
During a press conference, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling expressed, "Another sad day for the Chicago Police Department. We lost one of our own today. That officer was a victim of the type of crime that he was working against to keep people safe in this city."
Superintendent Snelling stated that Huesca was still wearing his CPD uniform when he was killed. He added, "The officer's vehicle was taken, but to get to the total motive of what happened, we need more information."
Mayor Brandon Johnson echoed the sentiment, stating, "We are deeply mourning the death of Officer Luis M. Huesca of the 5th District/Priority Response Team following an act of unconscionable gun violence in our city," as per Daily Mail.
He added, "I met with Officer Huesca's mother and uncle this morning and assured them that they have the full support of my administration as they deal with this unspeakable loss."
Remembering Andres Mauricio Vasquez Lasso in the wake of Luis M Huesca's tragic death
The loss of Huesca comes just over a year after CPD Officer Andres Mauricio Vasquez Lasso was killed in the line of duty.
In a touching tribute video, the fallen officer remembered his friend and colleague, highlighting Vasquez Lasso's dedication to the American dream and his exemplary service to the community.
Huesca said, "Andres was the epitome of the American dream because he came to this country looking for a way to move upward and make a societal difference. Stepped away from mediocrity. Did what others would not do in their lifetime, and actually succeeded in this country. He’s one of those guys that actually deserved this star."
The entire police department, under the leadership of Superintendent Snelling, is dedicated to "putting every resource available toward apprehending anyone involved" in the death of Huesca.
