LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: With the Republican National Convention just around the corner, former President Donald Trump remains undecided on his vice-presidential running mate.

According to CNN commentator and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, there is a strategic reason behind Trump’s delay.

The names under consideration for Trump’s VP slot reportedly include Sen Marco Rubio (R-FL), Tim Scott (R-SC), JD Vance (R-OH), and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum.

Donald Trump elaborates on his VP selection process

According to Medaite, on a recent episode of 'The Source' on CNN, host Kaitlan Collins shared a clip of Trump elaborating on his decision-making process.

In the clip, Trump described his approach to choosing a running mate, stating, “I have some good candidates and you know, I may be leaning one way and that changes sometimes. You know, all of a sudden you see something that you like or you don’t like, and you lean a little bit differently. It’s like a highly sophisticated version of 'The Apprentice'.” He added, “Ultimately, it’s more of an instinct.”

Reflecting on Trump’s previous selection of Mike Pence as his vice-presidential candidate only two days before the 2016 convention, Collins invited Haberman to offer her insights.

Haberman suggested that Trump is deliberately toying with the public regarding his choice. “He is tossing a bunch of names around as he talks,” Haberman said, explaining that the suggestion of Tim Scott as a candidate is not accurate. “I think the reporting Tim Scott is not actually on the shortlist is correct. I think that it is JD Vance, Marco Rubio, and Doug Burgum. And look, Donald Trump is a comfort zone and chemistry player.”

JD Vance emerges as leading contender for Donald Trump’s  VP pick

According to Haberman, JD Vance appears to be the frontrunner for the VP position. “The person he has the best chemistry with, according to all of my reporting, is JD Vance,” she noted. “Whether he decides that there’s something else that he needs in a VP remains to be seen. But you know, there is a part of him that seems to be enjoying this, and that came through in his voice in that interview.”

While Trump’s indecisiveness might seem like a political game, Haberman suggests that “there is a part of him that seems to be enjoying this, and that came through in his voice in that interview.”

Public reactions to Donald Trump’s VP selection process

As the anticipation builds around Trump’s choice for his vice-presidential running mate, reactions from the public have been diverse and often sharply divided.

One user wrote, "Trump's game show was canceled for poor ratings. He trying to recreate his former glory. Another failure for Trump."

Another user commented, "You have to have zero respect for yourself and country to want to be Donnie's running mate."

One added, "He's not going to let it show that he keeps getting turned down."

Another said, "Maggie Haberman is a sleazy gossip merchant."

One user replied, "He's a salesman, entertainer and entrepreneur. I would expect nothing less. 😊"

Another commented, "Yes it's a difficult choice when you have to pick someone you can be proud of and also be willing to hang by a noose."
