Maher calls guest remark ‘weirdest conspiracy theory’ over Epstein ‘good-looking’ claim
WASHINGTON, DC: The HBO host and conservative commentator Bill Maher was stunned when a guest during the latest episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher suggested deceased criminal Jeffrey Epstein captured the public’s imagination because “he was good-looking.”
On the Friday episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, the conservative commentator was joined by David Sedaris, a contributor to The New Yorker; Ian Bremmer, president and founder of Eurasia Group and GZERO Media; and Hagar Chemali, former spokesperson of the US Mission to the United Nations (UN).
Epstein's looks shaped public intrigue
During the “Overtime” segment of his show, Bill Maher found himself at the center of two unexpected exchanges involving convicted financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The first came after political scientist Ian Bremmer argued that Epstein’s death in prison was a suicide. Maher pushed back, saying, “We don’t know that,” before polling the audience on the issue.
“How many people think it was a suicide that he killed himself in prison?” Maher asked. The audience responded with near silence, prompting the host to remark, “Nobody. Wow. Nobody. This was one person right there. One person.”
The conversation took an even stranger turn when author David Sedaris suggested that Epstein’s appearance may have contributed to the public fascination surrounding him.
“How much do you think his being good-looking has to do with him capturing people’s imaginations?” Sedaris asked.
The remark drew immediate disbelief from the panel. Maher responded, “He was good-looking?” while commentator Hagar Chemali interjected, “I don’t think he was good-looking.”
Maher then jokingly polled the audience again before dismissing the suggestion outright, saying, “That is the weirdest conspiracy theory I’ve ever heard.”
Maher slams Trump’s ‘emperor’ birthday game
Bill Maher, somewhere else during the same show, ridiculed President Donald Trump as a "red neck president" and compared the scheduled UFC fight at the White House to the gladiator games staged by Roman emperors.
“The really big sporting event is this weekend, you know, I’m sure you know what’s going on, our redneck president is turning 80, and to celebrate there is a UFC fight on the lawn,” Maher said, drawing parallels between the Knicks series and Sunday’s UFC fight.
“So the emperor is holding gladiator games on his birthday."
Maher also joked that President Donald Trump should stay away from Game 5 of the New York Knicks' playoff series, citing the team's loss after Trump attended Game 3.
