MARSHALL COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI: Two persons of interest were taken into custody after a newborn baby was found behind a dumpster, as per Wreg.

27-year-olds Marlid Susana Carballo and Arsides Gomez are charged with conspiracy to commit a crime and false reporting of a crime.

Where was the newborn found?

A newborn baby girl was found alive but alone behind a dumpster on Wednesday, January 24 night near Cayce, Mississippi. Marshall County authorities say the baby, a two-to three-week-old girl, was found at a mobile home community on Grove Boulevard in Cayce around 7.30.

Authorities reported that three men heard what they believed to be a baby screaming while they were removing trash. The infant was discovered wrapped in blankets in a car seat.

"The baby had multiple blankets wrapped around it and actually had a blanket over the top of the car seat,” said Kelly McMillen, Commander of Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

The baby was taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis and is reportedly doing well. The child will be released to Marshall County DHS, authorities said.

Cops seek public's help

On Thursday, January 25, Marshall County Investigators returned to the Cayce scene in an attempt to find out who dropped off the baby. They looked through the mobile home park's surveillance cameras and are going to have the child's car seat examined for fingerprints and DNA.

“We’re not even sure if this child is from our area. If you’re aware of anybody that’s had a child abducted or that’s been taken by force of violence, you need to contact us immediately,” McMillen said.

Additionally, anyone with information is asked to call the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office at 662-252-1311.

As per USA Today, the incident has sparked discussions of Safe Haven laws, with some community members calling for more publicity on safe surrenders and baby boxes.
