WASHINGTON, DC: Mary Trump has spoken out against her uncle, President Donald Trump, over his reaction to the death of former FBI Director Robert Mueller. She said his comments were "part of the problem" in a post that drew significant attention online.

Mueller, who led the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, passed away at the age of 81. His death drew responses from across the political spectrum, including a controversial one from Trump.

Trump’s Mueller death remark sparks widespread backlash

Following news of Mueller’s death, Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “Good, I’m glad he’s dead,” adding that Mueller could “no longer hurt innocent people.”

The comment quickly sparked backlash from critics and political observers. Mary, the president’s niece and a frequent critic, responded publicly.

“Robert Mueller served his country honorably for decades. In response to his death, Trump wrote: "Good. I'm glad he's dead." Her remarks were widely shared on social media.

“If you think that's acceptable or even remotely ok, you are part of the problem.” Critics said Trump’s remarks reflected a pattern of sharp rhetoric toward political opponents, even after their deaths.

Robert Mueller’s legacy and political divisions

Mueller’s career included leading the FBI after the September 11 attacks and overseeing key counterterrorism operations. He later served as special counsel during a period of intense political division in Washington.

His investigation into Russian interference was a major issue throughout Trump's presidency, adding to the already high level of political tension.

The investigation didn't lead to charges against Trump, but it did lead to charges against several of his associates and showed that foreign powers were trying to interfere.

Criticism grows over Trump’s reaction to Mueller death

Mary Trump’s comments added to the criticism, framing the reaction as indicative of broader concerns about political discourse.

Michael Steele, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, wrote on X: “@realDonaldTrump you are a vile disgusting man. Petty and pathetic, you are a hypocrite who reeks of weakness and insecurities with no moral core. Regardless of the politics, the American people should be embarrassed and ashamed for ever having entrusted you with leadership.”

Democrats also weighed in to denounce Trump for his criticism of Mueller.

Dan Goldman, a congressman from New York, posted that “the President of the United States disgustingly celebrates Mueller’s death simply because he exposed Trump’s efforts to steal the 2016 election. Mueller and Trump represent polar opposites of what a public servant should be.”

The exchange between Trump and his critics, including Mary Trump, highlights continued divisions in US politics over both the legacy of the investigation and broader issues of tone in public discourse.
