Matthew Perry’s assistant accused of trying to erase evidence ahead of sentencing in overdose case
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The case linked to Matthew Perry remains one of the most sensitive stories in Hollywood surrounding his death. A fresh update has come through a new court filing obtained by TMZ. It shows that federal prosecutors claim the former live-in assistant tried to erase the evidence trail connected to the actor’s death.
In the filing, prosecutors say Kenneth Iwamasa told a person identified as "BM" to throw away d**g vials and syringes after Perry’s death. He is set to be sentenced on Wednesday, May 27, and could face up to 15 years in prison.
Just before this filing, Perry’s sister Caitlin and Madeline Morrison reportedly blamed the former assistant for leaving the 'Friends' actor “in a hot tub to die.” He died in October 2023 at the age of 54 due to an illicit substance overdose.
A fresh update about new court filing regarding Matthew Perry
In the new filing obtained by TMZ, federal prosecutors say Perry’s former live-in assistant went all in to control damage right after the 'Friends' actor's death. They allege he directed another person to destroy illicit substance-related evidence, shred documents, and delete digital records.
Prosecutors also claim Iwamasa repeatedly misled investigators at the start. They say he first hid details about giving multiple injections on the day of Perry’s death, and later claimed Perry had hidden d**g bottles himself. Officials say this version is not true.
The filing further alleges that he ordered the destruction of a prescription document and a handwritten note linking a doctor to the d**g supply.
Prosecutors also say Iwamasa later admitted parts of the cleanup in a phone call with a middleman named Erik Fleming. They claim he said he "cleaned up the scene," got rid of bottles and syringes, and even changed passwords on Perry’s devices.
Caitlin and Madeline Morrison blame Kenneth Iwamasa, call actions deeply devastating
Before the sentencing, Caitlin and Madeline Morrison submitted a victim impact statement on May 20, where they strongly criticized and blamed Kenneth Iwamasa for his actions, expressing deep grief and shock. Morrison said that Iwamasa "tainted our final memories of saying goodbye" to Perry.
She wrote, “He had injected my brother with a lethal dose and left him in a hot tub to die. It is difficult to put into words the sense of betrayal I felt when I found out what Kenny had done. In many ways, it felt like my brother died all over again,” Madeline said in her statement to US District Judge Sherilyn Garnett.
She further added, “Everything I believed about the day he died-everything Kenny told us-was a lie,” and continued, “The idea that someone my brother considered family could betray him in such an unimaginable way is something I never could have conceived.”
She said the situation has left her feeling deeply hurt and shocked by the contrast between what she believed and what was later revealed.
