WASHINGTON, DC: In her highly anticipated memoir 'Melania', the former first lady Melania Trump revealed a pivotal and unexpected moment in the fall of 2019 when Donald Trump invited her into the White House's most secure room.

Despite lacking a security clearance, former president Donald Trump's wife was given a front-row seat to a top-secret US military operation that led to the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Describing the "seemingly normal" weekend that took a dramatic turn, Melania Trump wrote, "I was caught off guard when I received a call informing me that the president wanted to see me in the Oval Office." She soon found herself in the Situation Room for the first time, where her husband whispered, “Watch this incredible action at work,” as the mission unfolded.

In a rare moment of personal reflection, Melania recounts her emotional connection with Conan, the Belgian Malinois military dog of the Delta team injured during the mission in Syria, whose bravery earned him a medal at her suggestion. “After his recovery, we were honored to welcome him to the White House to present him with a medal for his exceptional courage,” she penned, reported the Daily Beast.

What is the Situation Room?

Former president Donald Trump wanted his wife to witness a US military operation as it unfolded in the Situation Room, a highly secure command center, where top military and intelligence leaders, alongside the president and vice president, monitor classified and covert missions in real time.

Historian Tim Naftali notes that a first lady can be granted access to government secrets at the president's discretion. It’s also reported that Trump requested a top-secret security clearance for his son-in-law Jared Kushner despite objections from intelligence officials.

Former acting secretary of defense Christopher Miller addressed Melania’s unexpected presence in the Situation Room in his own memoir last year, noting, “I wondered how it would play in the press if word got out that the first lady had popped in to watch a major military operation.”

Melania Trump refers to Mike Pence only as vice president in memoir

Melania Trump's memoir comes at a critical time, with Donald Trump locked in a tight presidential race against Kamala Harris. The book also touches on Melania’s stance on key political issues like abortion rights, positioning her as a voice that could resonate with Republican women.

In her memoir, Melania—who could potentially serve as the first lady again—revealed that she was not a passive observer during the tense and high-stakes raid; instead, she engaged actively.

“Curious about the specifics, I inquired about the number of troops involved, and the details were explained to me,” she recalled, naming several top officials present in the room. She notably refers to Mike Pence only as “the vice president” without using his name.

Reflecting on that critical operation, Melania wrote, “The mission to eliminate the leader of ISIS was a significant objective, and the successful completion of this operation would be a major accomplishment. This pivotal moment was one that Donald wanted to share with me.”
