VATICAN CITY: International unity, global leaders, dignitaries, and citizens gathered in Vatican City to pay their final respects to Pope Francis. Among those in attendance were President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump.

The event saw an impressive assembly of 170 international delegations, including 50 heads of state and 10 reigning monarchs, marking it as one of the most widely attended funerals in modern history.

The ceremony commenced promptly at 10 am local time, with Pope Francis' simple wooden casket being moved from St Peter’s Basilica to its final resting place in St Peter’s Square.

First lady Melania Trump was widely praised for her respectful and understated choice of attire for the occasion. Following Vatican protocol, Melania wore a black coat dress with detailed button accents, paired with a black lace mantilla and matching gloves.

Her decision to wear the veil was met with admiration, as it adhered to traditional customs and showed her respect for the Catholic rituals.

The president wore a classic navy blue suit and tie as he stood beside Melania in the front rows of St Peter's Square. The couple was seated among other dignitaries, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Estonian President Alar Karis, while Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia were also in attendance.

The Trumps had arrived in Rome, Italy, on the evening of Friday, April 25, flying aboard Air Force One. They were welcomed by official representatives upon arrival at Fiumicino International Airport before making their way to the Vatican for the service.

This heartfelt farewell to Pope Francis also drew a number of other prominent figures, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prince William, and Argentina’s President Javier Milei, among others.

First lady Melania Trump is being widely praised online for her dignified appearance at the funeral of Pope Francis, with many commending her choice of traditional black attire and veil.

One user wrote on Facebook, “Melania Trump impeccable, as usual, wearing a black veil at the pope’s funeral. Proud of her.”

Another added, “Watching the spectacle of the funeral of Pope Francis is special. Catholic or not, you have to respect his humility and core humanity. Why is Trump in a blue suit and blue tie? At least Melania is correctly attired with a veil. What a great ovation for Zelensky (Trump none!)”



 

A person commented, “Wow…pure class Thank you for bringing back elegance and sophistication to the world.”

Meanwhile, others took the opportunity to criticize Trump’s attire while doubling down on their admiration for Melania, with one writing, “Doesn't Trump own a black suit? Al least his wife knows how to dress appropriately.”
