NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Melania Trump is keeping a close watch on her only son, Barron Trump, as he enters his sophomore year at New York University’s Stern School of Business.

A political insider told PEOPLE that the first lady has devoted much of her energy to making sure her 19-year-old son is safe, happy, and well-adjusted in college life.

“Melania watches Barron constantly in an effort to be sure nobody messes with him or bullies him,” the source explained. “She always knows where he is and what he’s doing.”

Barron began his studies at NYU in September 2024, balancing his new independence with the unique pressures of being the son of President Donald Trump.

Unlike many college students, Barron has not been living in campus housing. Instead, he resides at Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan, a choice his mother made to ensure his comfort and security.

“She will do everything she can to make sure Barron does well in school and is socially and mentally adjusted to his life as a college student,” the insider shared in December 2024, noting that Melania wanted Barron to have the best possible academic and social transition, adding that dorm living wasn’t “in the stars” for him “at this point.”

Despite the unconventional arrangement, Barron is said to have adjusted well at NYU.

“He’s tall and handsome,” another source told PEOPLE. “A lot of people seem to think he’s pretty attractive — yes, even liberal people like him.”

Barron Trump has been absent from public appearances with his father since the January inauguration. During the 2024 campaign, however, the president credited his youngest son with helping craft outreach efforts to younger voters — from recommending podcast stops to shaping the campaign’s social media approach.

Melania Trump balances motherhood with her own pursuits

Though devoted to protecting Barron, Melania has also been engaged in her own projects. The source said she divided her time this summer between New York City, New Jersey, and Washington, often working quietly on initiatives behind the scenes.

“Melania is quiet and behind the scenes but always busy with something she is pursuing herself,” the source noted.

One major endeavor has been her upcoming documentary, scheduled for release later in 2025 through Amazon Prime Video. In August, she also made headlines for penning a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to end the invasion of Ukraine and protect innocent children caught in the violence.

“This isn’t a departure for her,” the insider noted. “It’s an issue close to her heart. She will always speak out when she feels it.”

For now, however, Melania’s greatest focus remains her son. As Barron begins his second year at NYU, she is determined to ensure that he thrives both academically and socially while navigating life in the spotlight.
