This year’s National Christmas Tree is a 35-foot red spruce sourced from the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest in Virginia. According to the National Park Service, the tradition of lighting the National Christmas Tree dates back to December 24, 1923, when President Calvin Coolidge illuminated a 48-foot balsam fir from Vermont. This year’s tree was decorated with 2,500 red, white, and green electric lights.

The event comes just over a week after Melania Trump officially welcomed the White House Christmas tree, a white fir from Michigan, during a separate ceremony. The tree was delivered by a horse-drawn carriage from Korson’s Tree Farms, pulled by two Clydesdales named Logan and Ben. As she posed for photographs, Melania remarked, "It's a beautiful tree." The 18½-foot tree will serve as the centerpiece of the Blue Room, marking a major honor for Korson’s Tree Farms after winning the National Christmas Tree Association’s nationwide competition.
