WASHINGTON,DC: First Lady Melania Trump stepped into one of the country's most contentious cultural debates on Tuesday, June 30 issuing a rare public statement after the Supreme Court upheld state laws restricting transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s school sports.

While welcoming the court’s decision, Melania emphasized that supporting the LGBTQIA+ community and protecting opportunities for female athletes are not mutually exclusive, striking a noticeably measured tone on an issue that has deeply divided American politics.

First lady weighs in by quoting passage from her book

Quoting a passage from her recently published memoir, Melania reminded followers that her views on the issue have been public for some time.

''As many of you may know, I fully support the LGBTQIA+ community. But we must also ensure that our female athletes are protected and respected.”

She noted that the Supreme Court had now affirmed the same principle in law, referencing the court's conclusion that schools may maintain girls’ and women’s sports based on biological identity.

Building on that message, the first lady argued that Americans do not have to choose between respecting LGBTQIA+ individuals and preserving competitive fairness in women’s athletics.

“America, we can support the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community and also protect opportunities for female athletes. Respect everyone and keep girls’ sports fair. Both ideals are essential.”

Remarks after SCOTUS ruling on trans athletes

Her comments stood out because Melania Trump rarely weighs in on major policy debates, particularly while serving as first lady.

Rather than framing the issue as a political fight, she presented it as an effort to balance two principles she believes can coexist.

Her statement came just hours after the Supreme Court issued a landmark 6-3 ruling upholding laws in Idaho and West Virginia that prohibit transgender girls from participating on girls’ school sports teams.

The decision is expected to influence similar laws already enacted across more than two dozen states.

The court's three liberal justices dissented, arguing that the restrictions conflict with federal protections against sex discrimination.

President Donald Trump quickly celebrated the outcome, portraying it as a major victory for his administration's broader campaign to protect women's sports.

The ruling represents another significant legal victory for Trump's second-term agenda, which has included executive actions recognizing only two biological sexes for federal policy and directing agencies to oppose transgender participation in women's sports.

While the president celebrated the decision in unmistakably political terms, Melania Trump's response drew attention for its different emphasis.

Instead of focusing solely on the legal victory, she paired her support for protecting female athletes with an explicit affirmation of the LGBTQIA+ community, presenting her position as one rooted in respect for both groups.
