Meryl Streep and Martin Short’s intimate London dinner outing reignites romance speculation

LONDON, ENGLAND: Actress Meryl Streep and actor-comedian Martin Short were recently spotted at what appeared to be a cozy dinner outing in London, reigniting romance rumors surrounding the longtime friends and ‘Only Murders in the Building’ co-stars.

A fan photo shared on X on Sunday, May 17, showed the pair seated closely together inside a restaurant while looking at a phone screen. In the image, Streep appeared to rest her shoulder on Short’s chest as they enjoyed their evening together. 

According to the fan who posted the image, the restaurant visit happened unexpectedly during their time in London, with the caption mistakenly referring to Short as Streep’s husband. 

Martin Short and Meryl Streep continue friendship amid dating rumors

Despite ongoing speculation surrounding their relationship, both actors have denied dating rumors. Streep has remained single since her split from former husband Don Gummer was confirmed in 2023, while Short has been single since the death of his wife Nancy Dolman in 2010.

The outing comes as reports suggest the sixth season of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ is currently filming in London, marking the first time the hit series has filmed outside the United States. Their co-star Steve Martin recently shared several Instagram photos from the city, including visits to Trafalgar Square and a gift shop selling London-themed beanies.

Dating rumors involving Streep and Short first began in January 2024 after they attended the Golden Globe Awards together. At the time, a representative for Short denied any romance, stating the pair were “just very good friends.”

Despite repeated denials, speculation has continued over the past two years as the pair have frequently appeared together at public events, Broadway outings, and dinners. They were also photographed holding hands during the season 4 premiere of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ in Los Angeles.

Short has often spoken warmly about working with Streep on the Hulu series, where the pair portray romantic partners Oliver Putnam and Loretta Durkin. During a June 2025 appearance on the ‘Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend’ podcast, Short admitted he felt nervous acting alongside the Oscar-winning actress for the first time.

He recalled filming an early flirtatious piano scene together and said Streep helped calm his nerves between takes. 

“The first day of shooting,” he recalled, “which was rare because I’m not brand new, I was driving to work and I thought, ‘I’m nervous today. I’m working with Meryl Streep.’”

Short described the experience as “one of the great thrills of my life.”
