WASHINGTON, DC: Conservative commentator Michael Knowles warned that President Donald Trump is taking an enormous political gamble with the ongoing Iran strikes, arguing that the outcome could either damage his presidency or define it as a historic success.

Speaking to 'Daily Wire' on Saturday, February 28, Knowles described the moment as a turning point with consequences that extend far beyond the current events.

Knowles says 'Trump risking his legacy'

Knowles drew a sharp comparison to the Iraq War era, warning that Trump’s decision carries long-term stakes.

“If this goes south, President Trump is risking not only his foreign policy credibility, but perhaps his whole presidential legacy in precisely the way George W. Bush did,” he said.

The remark highlights concerns among some conservatives that military escalation in Iran could politically backfire if the conflict drags on or fails to achieve clear objectives.

However, Knowles made clear he believes the upside is just as significant if the strategy succeeds.

“However, if this works, if the United States ousts the Ayatollah, who has been an enemy of the United States since the regime took power in 1979, If the United States succeeds in regime change in Iran and helps to bring about a more pro-Western and more popular regime there, this will be the greatest foreign policy accomplishment of any president in our lifetime since the end of the Cold War.”

Knowles stressed that no one can confidently predict how the conflict will unfold.

“All of that to say, we don't know what's going to happen, and anyone who tells you what's going to happen tomorrow or the day after in a war is lying to you or ignorant. However, the one thing we know with certainty is the stakes could not possibly be higher for the White House.”Smoke wafts in the distance after missiles were fired over Qatar on February 28, 2026 in Doha, Qatar. Operation 'Epic Fury' in action

The remarks come as the US and its allies continue military operations against key Iranian military facilities and suspected missile and drone infrastructure.

Iranian-backed militias have reportedly engaged in retaliatory attacks on US bases across the Middle East, leading to a cycle of escalation that has involved multiple strikes and counterstrikes.

President Trump announced the operation from Mar-a-Lago, characterizing it as necessary to degrade Tehran’s ability to project power and protect US interests.

In a video statement, he said, “When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take.”

Several countries across the region have shut their airspace amid the exchange of attacks.

As the situation continues to evolve, military analysts say the coming days could determine whether the campaign achieves its strategic goals or deepens regional instability.
