Michael Steele accuses Judge Aileen Cannon of 'coordination' with GOP over dismissal of Trump's docs case
WASHINGTON, DC: Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele accused Judge Aileen Cannon of "coordination" with the Republican National Convention after the latter dismissed former president Donald Trump's classified documents case on July 15.
The date of the dismissal collided with the beginning of the GOP's convention in Milwaukee, where Trump announced JD Vance as his running mate and himself formally accepted the nomination of the party for the upcoming general election.
Cannon was appointed to the bench by Trump back in 2020. She declared the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith by the Department of Justice as unconstitutional while dismissing the case, and claimed that her decision was backed by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' opinion in the highest court's presidential immunity case.
According to Newsweek, Trump was facing 40 federal charges over his alleged handling of sensitive materials discovered at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, after he was voted out of the White House. He was also accused of obstructing federal officials from retrieving the documents and had pleaded not guilty on all counts.
Judge Aileen Cannon's timing of dismissing classified documents discussed
The subject of Aileen Cannon's timing of dismissing the classified document's case was brought up on the Saturday, July 20 episode of the MSNBC show, 'The Weekend', co-hosted by Steele along with former prosecutor Katie Phang.
"Why doesn't Judge Cannon hear this in February? If the critical issue of who gets to prosecute this case is so important to the viability of this case, why not dispose of that critical issue in February?" inquired Phang during the episode.
"No, we hear the oral argument including friends of the court, which never happens. We hear this at the end of June, the beginning of July, and then she sits on a 93-page opinion for that long? No, the reality is once Clarence Thomas gave her the green light to be able to file her dismissal, that is when she did it," she continued, adding, "And for her to drop that on the first day of the RNC stinks. Something is rotten in Denmark and I'm going to say it is Aileen Cannon."
In response, Steele stated, "I am with you on that one because the timing and the process, the level of coordination is the only word that comes to mind."
Internet agrees with MSNBC hosts
Netizens commenting on the Newsweek website were at one with Michael Steele's take on the issue. Some claimed that the collusion between Donald Trump and the judge was obvious and expected, while slamming the GOP for being 'corrupt to the core,' as the following examples demonstrate.
"It's all so obvious. She was appointed by Trump because Trump knew he would need someone down there in his home district to help him out. It worked out perfectly for him. She has been working for Trump the entire case. This case has so much evidence against Trump they will do anything to avoid a trial," stated a person.
"The constant barrage of illegal and partisan decisions and delays by Judge Cannon are a reflection of the GOP as a whole, they are all corrupt to the core," wrote another.
"None of them even care to know the truth, see the evidence, or hear the testimony under oath. They'd rather Trump be bailed out by some garbage technicality. They just want their hero to be elected," expressed one user.
"Of course the fix is in. There is a criminal conspiracy here, its blatantly obvious. Delay until the election, even though they know Trump is guilty," jibed another.
"Cannon, RNC, and Clarence Thomas. It's like a well choreographed ballet," quipped a user.
