CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Former first lady Michelle Obama is facing strong criticism over social media as she shared her parents' value about not desiring more than what was required during her speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Tuesday, August 20.

Michelle took to the stage at the United Center on the second evening of the DNC, where she threw her considerable popular weight behind the Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, saying, "My girl, Kamala Harris, is more than ready for this moment. She is one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency. And she is one of the most dignified."

Being in her hometown of Chicago, Michelle invoked the memory of her mother, sharing that the last time she was in the city was to memorialize her.

"I still feel her loss so profoundly," she expressed, adding that she was not sure if she would be "steady enough" to speak at the convention, but felt compelled to do so "because of the sense of duty" that she felt to "honor her memory."

Michelle Obama shares her parents' value

"You see, my mom, in her steady, quiet way, lived out that striving sense of hope (of a better future) every single day of her life," Michelle Obama said to an encaptivated audience. "She believed that all children, all people, have value that anyone can succeed if given the opportunity."

"She and my father didn't aspire to be wealthy. In fact, they were suspicious of folks who took more than they needed," she continued. "They understood that it wasn't enough for their kids to thrive if everyone else around us was drowning."

"So my mother volunteered at the local school. She always looked out for the other kids on the block. She was glad to do the thankless, unglamorous work that for generations has strengthened the fabric of this nation,” she added.

Internet calls out Michelle Obama over her mansion in Martha's Vineyard

Netizens, especially conservatives were quick to point out the irony of the former first lady talking about the idea of rejecting more than one's need, while owning a mansion in Martha's Vineyard, which was worth $11.75 million in 2020, according to Homes & Gardens.

"Michelle Obama, who has a net worth of about $70 million, says her parents were always suspicious of people who took more than they needed," wrote X user Collin Rugg on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

"I do love when the rich talk down to us poor folk," tweeted another.

"Michelle Obama claims her parents were wary of wealth, yet here she is with $70M. Interesting how the rhetoric changes when you're sitting on a fortune," commented a third.

"So basically she’s gaslighting people now… very openly and publicly. Why is that rich democrats always talk down to the peasants like this?" inquired a fourth.

"Rules for thee but not for me," chided a fifth.

"Liberals love their lies and hypocrisy," jibed yet another.
