Michelle Obama's $3k DNC attire draws flak after she gloats over her parents' modesty
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Michelle Obama boasted to delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago that her parents were "suspicious" of the wealthy while donning a nearly $3,000 pantsuit.
The former first lady opened her DNC speech by stating that she had visited her hometown of Chicago the last time to honor her mother "who showed me the meaning of hard work and humility and decency" and "who set my moral compass high and showed me the power of my own voice."
"She and my father didn't aspire to be wealthy. In fact, they were suspicious of folks who took more than they needed," Michelle said, per Fox News. "They understood that it wasn't enough for their kids to thrive if everyone else around us was drowning. So my mother volunteered at the local school."
Michelle Obama's black pantsuit jacket is available for pre-order online
Michelle Obama was wearing a black pantsuit jacket the entire time, which cost $1,690 and can be pre-ordered online by New York fashion designer Monse.
The online description invites customers to "pre-order our Resort 2025 Criss Cross Jacket as seen on Michelle Obama at the DNC." She accessorized the blazer with $890 worth of matching pants.
"Pre-order our Resort 2025 Tuxedo Cuff Trousers as seen on Michelle Obama at the DNC," Monse wrote. The estimated ship date isn't until November 8, three days after the election.
Michelle Obama's DNC attire is termed 'forward' by NY Times
Michelle Obama's ensemble at the Democratic National Convention, a sleeveless take on the classic pantsuit, was characterized by the New York Times as "forward," echoing the former first lady's remarks.
The Times' Critics Notebook described Monse as a "small, independent label founded by Fernando Garcia, a Dominican-raised New York designer, and Laura Kim, an Asian American (and one of the founders of the Slaysians, a group of fashion insiders formed to combat anti-Asian hate)."
Garcia and Kim are also the designers of Oscar de la Renta, "the brand that has dressed first ladies for decades and which Mrs. Obama wore when she was living on Pennsylvania Avenue and still does," the Times said.
Michelle Obama's stylist gets praised
The former first lady's stylist, Meredith Koop, was praised by the newspaper for her choice of Monse.
The Times said selecting "the smaller fashion house over the establishment name was fully in line with Mrs. Obama’s practice, developed as first lady, of using her platform to highlight lesser known businesses (especially fashion businesses) and designers who represent the stories she is telling: about entrepreneurship, the melting pot, the American dream. The election."
Michelle "wore a dark navy sleeveless jacket belted over cropped trousers. The lapels of the top were de- and reconstructed to cross over the throat in an almost militaristic way, and the shoulders jutted out to frame the biceps. It was both understated and edgy, kind of armorial," the Times said. "This was going to be a fight, her tunic and her speech suggested, and everyone should gear themselves up to get out the vote."
Donald Trump's campaign criticizes Barack Obama and Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama was criticized by Donald Trump's campaign and others for failing to disclose that she and her husband, former president Barack Obama, owned opulent properties in Chicago, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Washington, DC, and that their parents "were suspicious of folks who took more than they needed."
Together, the Obamas are estimated to have a net worth of $70 million.
Netizens hail Michelle Obama as prime example of 'hypocrisy'
Netizens lashed out at the former first lady of the US for sporting an expensive outfit despite boasting about her parent's modesty.
One X user tweeted, "Well she's right. I'm very suspicious of her and her $70 million."
Another asked, "So if the country is so racist how did she and Barrack succeed? How did they overcome 'oppression'? What mountains did they have to climb?"

"Michelle Obama's high-end fashion choice at the DNC starkly contrasts with her message about her parents' skepticism of wealth, highlighting the paradox of promoting humble values while indulging in luxury. It raises questions about the authenticity of her message," remarked one.
"Democratic Party=Party Of Hypocrisy," said someone else.
