WASHINGTON, DC: House Speaker Mike Johnson hailed President Donald Trump as the “only one” capable of bringing Iran to the negotiating table after reports surfaced that a possible peace agreement between the US and Iran is now underway.
Johnson’s praise came as Trump claimed an agreement with Iran had been “largely negotiated” and said details would be announced soon, including a possible reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The development quickly fueled fresh attention around Trump’s handling of Middle East diplomacy and his growing push to frame himself as the key figure behind global stability efforts.
Mike Johnson elevates Trump on Iran
Johnson amplified the message in a post on X on Sunday, May 24, where he framed Trump as uniquely equipped to handle negotiations with Iran, which he described as “the world’s largest state sponsor of te***rism".
“President Trump is the ONLY one who could have gotten Iran — the world’s largest state sponsor of te***rism — to the negotiating table,” Johnson wrote.
He continued, “We are greatly encouraged to learn a PEACE DEAL in Iran is underway — and look forward to learning more about the specifics.”
Johnson also tied the possible agreement directly to Trump’s leadership, adding, “Under President Trump’s leadership, our nation is stronger, more respected on the global stage, and safer than ever before.”
Donald Trump says deal is near
Trump fueled the speculation further after revealing on social media that an agreement had been “largely negotiated” between the United States, Iran and “various other Countries”.
“Final aspects and details of the deal are currently being discussed, and will be announced shortly,” Trump said.
He also revealed he had a “very good call” with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar regarding what he described as a “Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE”.
The president later said he also spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and claimed the conversation “went very well”.
While Trump did not release specifics about the proposed agreement, he insisted any final deal would “absolutely” prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Iran signals talks are progressing
Iran also acknowledged that negotiations were moving forward, though officials stopped short of confirming a finalized agreement.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said US and Iranian positions had been “converging” over the past week, while cautioning that major issues remained unresolved, according to a source.
Baqaei also described discussions surrounding a possible “memorandum of understanding” built around a framework consisting of 14 points.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Trump’s “extraordinary efforts to pursue peace” and called recent talks “very useful and productive,” adding that Pakistan had been helping facilitate negotiations as an intermediary.
