Mikie Sherrill says GOP has become a ‘party of one’ serving only Trump, not the American people

MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY: Incoming New Jersey Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) appeared on 'Face the Nation' on Sunday, November 9, where she asserted that the Republican Party has become a “party of one,” with everything it does centered around President Trump.
During the interview, she was asked whether, given her new role as the chief executive of a state heavily impacted by the shutdown, she would support the Democratic Party’s stance on withholding government funding until Obamacare subsidies are extended.
Mikie Sherrill blasts GOP over health care cost
Commenting on the Republicans’ hold over the government, she said, “When you have the Republicans that have the presidency, they have the majority in the Senate, they have the majority in the House, and have taken over the court system. Then they have a responsibility to open up this government.”
She argued that Republicans continue to attack health care, warning that "if they fail to fund the Affordable Care Act, costs in New Jersey could rise by 175 percent, where prices are already high." According to her, that increase in costs will push many people off their health care, adding to “the huge Medicare cuts” in the “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
She also pointed to tariff policies that are raising grocery prices, as well as ongoing actions by the Trump administration that she says are driving up gas prices.
She argued that “again and again, we’re seeing the Trump administration punishing people, and these Republicans have got to come to the table, and they’ve got to start really working for the American people.”
Mikie Sherrill warns Trump policies risk higher costs
Sherrill said that after speaking with thousands of people across New Jersey, she found they wanted an agenda that would lower their costs and deliver results quickly.
Emphasizing the stakes, Sherrill said people “know that the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ is going to take away their health care.” She further noted that “they know attacks on the Gateway Tunnel Project are going to raise costs in the state and significantly cut into job opportunities.”

Sherrill concluded, “So they want to know that whoever is governing is going to be focused on governing for them, not a party of one like Donald Trump.”
Recently clinching a major victory, she won the 2025 gubernatorial election in New Jersey by defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli.
Her win marks the third straight term a Democrat will hold the governor’s office, a feat not achieved by either party since 1961. In Virginia, Rep Abigail Spanberger secured a victory over Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, the state’s current lieutenant governor, who unlike Ciattarelli did not have President Trump’s endorsement.
Both Sherrill and Spanberger belong to the more moderate faction of the Democratic Party, and strategists are expected to highlight their campaigns as models for success in competitive states ahead of next year’s midterm elections.
