Missing US pilot in Iran equipped with survival tools as search intensifies in hostile territory
WASHINGTON, DC: The search for an American fighter pilot missing in Iran is still ongoing. Experts say the pilot likely has essential survival tools to help avoid capture after his jet was shot down.
The pilot was flying an F-15E Strike Eagle that crashed during a combat mission. One crew member has been rescued, but the other remains missing. Reports from the ground, including photos of an ejection seat found in southern Iran, suggest the crew was able to eject before the crash, but it is still unclear what happened to the missing service member.
Four key tools could aid survival
Jim Cardoso, a former US Air Force pilot and current director of the Global and National Security Institute at the University of South Florida, told the Mirror that all aircrews going on a combat mission are prepared for the worst-case scenario with everything they need.
"All aircrew departing on a combat mission are equipped with a variety of tools to assist in their survival and recovery," he told The Mirror US.
"This includes radios for communication, signaling devices, a handheld GPS for navigation, and a handgun for self-protection. They are taught techniques to use these tools to survive, live off the land, evade capture, and aid in their own recovery."
He also said that the US Air Force is equally trained for combat rescue and personnel recovery missions, allowing it to quickly enter enemy territory to find survivors.

"The US military takes recovery of aircrew members downed in enemy territory very seriously," he added.
"The Air Force organizes and trains both aviation and ground assets specifically for the combat rescue and personnel recovery mission.”
The training is part of a broader survival program designed to prepare service members for extreme conditions, including the possibility of being pursued in enemy territory.
Intensive rescue effort underway
The US military has launched a large-scale recovery mission to locate the missing pilot, deploying specialized aircraft and personnel trained in combat rescue operations. Cardoso noted that such missions are a core focus of the Air Force.

“They have the ability to penetrate hostile or denied territory, integrate with aviation assets in the area that can support the rescue efforts, locate survivors, and effect pickup.
“The HH-60W and HC-130J provide dedicated helicopter and fixed-wing capability and are likely deeply involved in any ongoing rescue effort."
As the operation to locate the second crew member continues, Cardoso expressed confidence, arguing that Air Force pilots "are the best trained in the world."
"That includes not only executing their combat missions but surviving and evading when necessary."
“They also have confidence to execute even high-risk operational missions because they’re backed up by the right tools and aviation assets dedicated to their repatriation," he concluded.
Aircraft such as rescue helicopters and refueling planes are expected to play a major role in the ongoing operation, as forces attempt to locate the missing airman before opposing forces reach him.
