'More energized than ever': Tom Kean Jr breaks silence, vows Capitol Hill comeback 'within weeks'
WASHINGTON, DC: New Jersey Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr broke nearly three months of public silence on Tuesday, June 2, releasing a statement saying he will return to Capitol Hill in person "within a matter of weeks" and promising to fully disclose the nature of his medical condition at that time.
Kean, who has not voted since March 5 and has missed more than 100 votes, said he remains "more energized than ever" to serve his district.
Tom Kean Jr vows Capitol Hill return
Breaking months of silence, Representative Tom Kean Jr issued a direct written statement to address his constituents and colleagues. Rather than appearing in person, the 57-year-old lawmaker used the statement to signal an optimistic shift in his recovery.
Kean emphasized that he is actively preparing to step back into his legislative duties, shifting away from remote responsibilities.
He stated, “I am more energized than ever to keep fighting for the people of New Jersey’s 7th District. Right now I am focused on my recovery and under the advice of healthcare professionals, I will transition from virtual work to in person work within a matter of weeks."
"At that time I will be completely transparent as to the nature of my medical condition. Once again, I appreciate all of the prayers and patience from my constituents and colleagues. I understand the need for transparency on this matter and I look forward to sharing my experience with the public,” he added.
Tom Kean Jr offers no diagnosis details
While the statement was designed to reassure voters, Kean withheld specific details about his illness, leaving the public and Capitol Hill in the dark about the exact nature of his diagnosis.
Furthermore, despite his promise to return within weeks, he did not provide a specific date for when he expects to physically return to Washington.
By keeping details of his illness private until he returns to Washington, Kean is delaying full disclosure to the public. This leaves voters with many unanswered questions as his re-election race begins to intensify.
Tom Kean Jr draws contrast with Democrats
Despite the prolonged absence, Kean faces no opposition in Tuesday’s Republican primary and secured a powerful endorsement from President Donald Trump.
However, a tough general election lies ahead in a highly competitive swing district that Kean won by just 5 points in 2024.
Four Democrats, Rebecca Bennett, Michael Roth, Tina Shah, and Brian Varela, are actively vying to unseat him, using the communication gap to express growing frustration over his absence.
Kean, however, remains defensive of his record and intent on holding the seat. “Serving the people of this district is the honor of my life,” Kean said.
“Every day, I wake up determined to build on the results I have delivered for New Jersey families such as lowering costs, restoring the SALT deduction, funding our law enforcement, helping veterans, standing with Israel, strengthening our economy, and making government work better for the people it serves.”
Deflecting local scrutiny toward national party politics, Kean concluded his statement by drawing a firm line between himself and his challengers.
“This campaign will offer a clear choice. While Washington Democrats continue pushing an agenda that is too extreme, too expensive, and out of step with New Jersey, I will continue putting our constituents first and working with anyone to get things done,” Kean said.
“I am optimistic about the road ahead, and ready to earn the support of voters in every corner of this district. Together, we are going to win this race and continue delivering for New Jersey.”
