NEW YORK: The New York Times columnist and podcast presenter Erza Klein urged President Biden to withdraw his candidacy for president and go out as a "hero."

"I want to say this clearly: I like Biden. I think he’s been a good president. I think he is a good president. I don’t like having this conversation. And I know a lot of liberals, a lot of Democrats are going to be furious at me for this show," Klein said during an episode of his podcast, 'The Ezra Klein Show.'

Klein added, "I think Biden, as painful as this is, should find his way to stepping down as a hero."

"The people whom Biden listens to — Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, Mike Donilon, Ron Klain, Nancy Pelosi, Anita Dunn — they need to get him to see this. Biden may come to see it himself," he further stated.

Referencing the moniker the president used during his 2020 campaign, Klein stated that the Democratic Party needs to support Biden in his endeavor to serve as "the bridge of the next generation."

“The party should help him find his way to that, to being the thing he said he would be in 2020, the bridge to the next generation of. And then I think Democrats should meet in August at the convention to do what political parties have done at conventions so many times before, organize victory,” he added.

Klein says people are worried about Biden's age

While acknowledging that Biden had made progress during his time in office, including passing the Inflation Reduction Act, Klein also pointed out that the president has been lagging in the polls.

He also brought up the controversy surrounding Biden's age, citing a damaging special counsel report that called him "a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

Klein mentioned, "To say this is a media invention, that people are worried about Biden’s age because the media keeps telling them to be worried about Biden’s age?"

He added, "If you’ve really convinced yourself of that, in your heart of hearts, I almost don’t know what to tell you. In poll after poll, 70 percent to 80 percent of voters are worried about his age. This is not a thing people need the media to see."

People on the internet took a jibe at Klein's statement. A user commented, "More like zero" whereas one said, "How does democrat news survive today? Are they profitable or just live on perverse billionaire fascination with perversion?"

Another user mentioned, "Vanity project by Ezra Klein at a time he knows it's too late for anyone else. I can tell you who is not the hero here: Klein!" whereas one said, "Have to respectfully disagree."

Another person said, "He’s going down for much more than that."
