WASHINGTON, DC: MAGA Rep Nancy Mace shared unconfirmed rumors on Sunday, August 24, about an active shooter on the University of South Carolina campus.

Mace, who is running for South Carolina governor, claimed on X (formerly Twitter) that there was an active shooter at the USC library. She also shared a photo—later deleted—of the shooter along with a few identifying characteristics.

Nancy Mace shares rumored info about active college shooter

Nancy Mace wrote on X, "Active shooter at USC library, 6ft white male w black pants. Please take cover, barricade, defend yourself if need be. Please be safe and we are praying for safety for our students and the safety of law enforcement as they take swift action to apprehend this individual."

However, the person Mace accused of being the shooter was later found to be carrying an umbrella, not a gun, on campus. Later that evening, the MAGA representative described the situation as "confusing" for all involved and posted a "thank you" note to local law enforcement who responded to the school.

She wrote, "I am eternally grateful for law enforcement from every agency who immediately went to work to protect our kids. The security at USC are trained by the FBI, and watching this and many other videos, that much is evident. They were swift, they were professional, they were fast."

In another post, she added, "Real, or a hoax, or a mistake, now would be an appropriate time to talk about hardened security at schools of all grades, colleges, and universities. This was a terrifying experience for students on campus and their families. Many are confused after being told there was an active shooter. Some are even afraid to return."

Internet slams Nancy Mace for sharing unconfirmed rumors

Several internet users slammed Nancy Mace after she shared unconfirmed rumors about an active shooter on the University of South Carolina campus, claiming there was an active shooter at the USC library.

A user wrote on X, "YOU DID IT It was YOUR MISTAKE You are 100% unhinged," while another added, "'I’m sorry for being wrong'. Fixed this for you." One person stated, "Literally nobody cares to hear you," while another mentioned, "That guy needs to sue you."

A user also wrote, "Well you didn’t help the situation by posting about it before all the facts were in!" while another commented, "Maybe refrain from amplifying an unconfirmed Internet rumor?"

One person added, "Maybe not get an umbrella confused for a gun and incite panic," while another stated, "HOLY S**T MAN are you for real? YOU DOXED AN INNOCENT GUY WITH YOUR CRAZY BULLS**T."
