WASHINGTON, DC: In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld access to the abortion pill mifepristone, a move celebrated by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as reported by The Hill.

The decision, delivered on Thursday, June 13, ensures that mifepristone remains available to women up to the 10th week of pregnancy and can be delivered through the mail. Pelosi lauded the ruling, calling it "the right decision for millions of women nationwide."

Pelosi emphasized that the decision rightly declared the plaintiff—a group of anti-abortion doctors—lacked the legal standing to challenge FDA actions regarding the drug. "This unanimous decision rejects a far-right attack on women’s health freedom more rooted in a desire to punish and control women than in science or law," she stated.

The high court's ruling overturned a lower court's decision that would have imposed restrictions on obtaining mifepristone, a drug that plays a crucial role in approximately two-thirds of abortions in the United States. Pelosi also seized the moment to criticize the MAGA movement, linking it to broader efforts to undermine reproductive rights.

"Just two years after ripping away fundamental reproductive rights with its outrageous Dobbs decision, the MAGA movement continues its onslaught of anti-women, anti-freedom attacks," Pelosi asserted.

"While the Supreme Court made the correct decision today, it must not be forgotten that it is because of Donald Trump and this Court that women today have less freedom than their mothers and their grandmothers," she continued.

President Joe Biden echoed Pelosi’s sentiments, framing the Supreme Court's decision as a temporary reprieve in a larger, ongoing battle for reproductive rights.

"Today’s decision does not change the fact that the fight for reproductive freedom continues. It does not change the fact that the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade two years ago, and women lost a fundamental freedom," Biden noted in his statement.

Meanwhile, Trump has distanced himself from calls for a national abortion ban, suggesting that abortion policy should be decided by individual states. "Now the states have it, and the states are putting out what they want," Trump remarked in April.

Abortion advocates caution that even without a federal ban, Trump’s potential return to the White House poses significant risks to reproductive rights, particularly access to abortion medication.

Nancy Pelosi's praise of the Supreme Court for mifepristone ruling draws flak online

Pelosi’s praise of the Supreme Court for upholding access to the abortion pill mifepristone sparked a wave of harsh reactions across social media. One user on Facebook commented, "It looks like Democrats like the Supreme Court and think it's legitimate...today."

Another remarked, "As if the court needed her approval. Next week, she will blast the court when they don't rule the way she thinks they should." "The Democrat talking point that the Court are right-wing religious zealots out to stop abortion has just been obliterated," one user wrote. Another added, "Again Nancy Pelosi shows she's a fake Catholic."

"There goes the false narrative that the Supreme Court is biased," a user posted, while another noted, "So we likey the right-wing Judges now? Isn’t that politically convenient." A user wrote, "The Supreme Court just took away one of the two things that Democrats are running on."

One user posted, "Dems are fine with SCOTUS when it agrees with them. Chameleons."
