WASHINGTON, DC: Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, is reportedly engaged in efforts behind the scenes to persuade President Joe Biden to step aside, paving the way for a different Democratic candidate to challenge former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

Pelosi has consistently stressed that Trump poses an existential threat to democracy and must be defeated in November. However, doubts about Biden's mental fitness for office have cast uncertainty on his ability to accomplish this goal.

Nancy Pelosi's conviction and behind-the-scenes maneuvers

Pelosi, a longtime ally of Biden, is now reportedly "convinced" that keeping Biden on the ticket would result in a Democratic loss of the White House. According to a stunning report by Politico, published on Monday, July 15, Pelosi has been actively working since June 27 to find a way to ease Biden out of the race.

Politico's Jonathan Martin detailed that Pelosi's efforts include making numerous phone calls and engaging in strategic conversations with key Democratic figures. "Pelosi, convinced Biden will lose, has been working the phones since June 27 in hopes of finding a way to ease him off the ticket," Martin wrote.

"One of her colleagues was struck to see her chatting, furtively but openly, with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries last week in a corner of the House Democratic cloakroom in plain sight of a dozen lawmakers," he continued. "The extent of Pelosi’s behind-the-scenes role hasn’t been fully revealed and may never be if the former speaker has her way."

"But I’m told by people familiar with the exchanges that she’s stage-managed phone calls to Jeffries, plotted strategy with the biggest names in Democratic politics, and told one former elected official bluntly that Biden’s legacy can’t be destroying their party," the report added.

Despite these efforts, the full extent of Pelosi's role may never be completely disclosed if she has her way.

These developments occurred before the assassination attempt on Trump. Recently, several House Democrats disclosed that Pelosi has been advising members against rallying behind Biden without a broader discussion on whether he is the best candidate to defeat Trump.

One House Democratic lawmaker told The Hill, "I did have a conversation with her, she is very concerned. It’s not like she’s like, ‘We’re sticking with this guy'."

Another source echoed Pelosi's concerns, stating, "The stakes are so high. We can't afford to do anything but have our best possible opportunity to win." Pelosi is reportedly worried that the Biden campaign's response to a lackluster debate performance in Atlanta last month did not constitute “an honest reckoning” or “an objective analysis.”

An unnamed Democrat noted, "It's very clear that she doesn't think that this matter is settled and that Joe Biden's statement - 'I'm running; shut up' - she said, 'No, we're still talking about this'."

Nancy Pelosi's public comments on Joe Biden's candidacy

However, Pelosi's spokesman Ian Krager told The Hill, "Speaker Pelosi fully supports whatever President Biden decides to do. We must turn our attention to why this race is so important: Donald Trump would be a disaster for our country and our democracy."

Despite the mounting pressure, Biden has insisted that he will remain in the race. Pelosi, on the other hand, hinted that a decision still needs to be made, telling MSNBC's 'Morning Joe', "It's up to the president to decide if he is going to run. We are all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running short. He's beloved, he's respected, and people want him to make that decision."

Pelosi and Biden have shared a long-standing relationship, with Pelosi being one of Biden's staunchest defenders on Capitol Hill. Nevertheless, her recent comments have been interpreted by some as a sign that she wants Biden to reconsider his candidacy.

When reminded that Biden has made up his mind, Pelosi responded, "I want him to do whatever he decides to do," adding, "Whatever he decides, we go with."

In a letter to House Democrats on Tuesday, July 9, Biden reaffirmed his commitment to the race, writing, “I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump."

Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden trolled on social media

That said, social media was inundated with reactions trolling Pelosi after it emerged she was working behind the scenes to get Biden to step aside.

"And replace him with who? Cackling Kamala?" one posted on X.

"She will go down in history. In a bad way. Bless her heart," another wrote.

"She's not wrong. Biden is finished, and even another choice won't help at this point," read a comment.

"Oh Biden is DONE at this point and the Democrats know it," someone else offered.

"Yeah, sounds like Nancy's getting a little anxious. She's got a reputation for being a master manipulator, so I'm not surprised she's trying to meddle in the election process again," another alleged.
