Nancy Pelosi vows Democrats will reclaim House Majority in 2026 in New Year message
WASHINGTON, DC: Nancy Pelosi rang in the New Year with a familiar mix of optimism, defiance and political resolve, using a heartfelt message to outline what she called a clear mission for Democrats heading into the 2026 midterm elections. The former House Speaker struck a hopeful tone while making an unmistakably bold prediction: "Democrats,: she said, "will take back the House Majority."
In a New Year message shared on social media on December 31, Pelosi framed the coming year as both personal and political, writing, “From my family to yours: Happy New Year!” before pivoting to a broader call to action rooted in faith, unity and electoral ambition.

Nancy Pelosi lays out Democratic mission for 2026
“With joy in our hearts, faith in the goodness of the American people and confidence in our collective power, our mission for 2026 is clear,” Pelosi wrote. “We must and we will take back the House Majority — For The People and For The Children.”
The message echoed themes Pelosi has returned to repeatedly during her decades-long career: belief in democratic institutions, trust in voters and the idea that governance should be anchored in responsibility rather than loyalty to any single leader.
Though Pelosi is preparing to step away from the House at the end of her term, she has made clear that her political influence - particularly in shaping the party’s strategy - is far from over.
Pelosi predicts Democrats will reclaim the gavel
Pelosi expanded on her confidence in Democrats’ prospects during an interview with ABC News’ 'This Week' that aired December 28. Speaking with Jonathan Karl, the former Speaker predicted that her party will regain control of the House and fundamentally change how Congress operates.
“When the party takes control of the chamber,” Pelosi said, Democrats must work to reestablish congressional authority. “Right now, the Republicans in the Congress have abolished the Congress. They just do what the president insists that they do. That will be over. That ends as soon as we have the gavel.”
Pelosi, who made history as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House, said Democrats must focus on restoring the institution’s role as a co-equal branch of government rather than functioning as an extension of the White House.
Hakeem Jeffries positioned as next Democratic leader
As she prepares to step back, Pelosi signaled confidence in her successor, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, whom she described as fully prepared to lead.
“Hakeem Jeffries is ready,” Pelosi said. “He’s eloquent, he’s respected by the members, he is a unifier.”
The endorsement carries weight coming from Pelosi, whose tenure as Speaker was defined by tight caucus discipline and strategic maneuvering during some of the most turbulent years in modern congressional history.
Pelosi addresses Trump, impeachment and January 6
Pelosi also addressed questions about how Democrats should approach President Donald Trump if they regain power, cautioning against leading with impeachment rhetoric.
She emphasized that oversight, not predetermined outcomes, should guide the process. “I’ve said to people, the one person who was responsible for the impeachments of Donald Trump is Donald Trump,” Pelosi said. “It’s not something you decide to do - it’s what violation of the Constitution he engages in.”
Reflecting on the events of January 6, 2021, Pelosi said it was 'clear' that Trump 'had incited an insurrection,' calling the attack on the Capitol an assault not just on lawmakers but on the Constitution itself.
“What happened that day was horrible,” she said. “It was an assault on the Capitol, the symbol of democracy to the world.”
A parting focus on unity and the American people
As Pelosi looks toward the close of her time in Congress, she said her focus remains on helping Democrats win back the House and on shaping a political conversation grounded in shared values.
“By and large, the American people are good people,” Pelosi said. “And I would like to see us take us back to a place where governance and politics understand that.”
