National Guard troops ambushed in DC as Afghan suspect opens fire, one dead, one critical
WASHINGTON, DC: A shocking scene unfolded in the nation’s capital on Wednesday, November 27, as two National Guard members were ambushed and shot by an Afghan suspect, just moments before a chilling photo captured authorities rushing to save their lives.
The disturbing image, shared by CBS News, shows Army Specialist Sarah Beckstorm, 20, and Air Force Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, lying motionless on the sidewalk as law enforcement officers, including Secret Service agents, scrambled to secure the chaotic area. Witnesses described the moment as something “out of a war zone,” with shattered glass on the pavement from bullets striking a nearby bus stop during the attack.
Beckstrom and Wolfe, both from West Virginia, were in DC as part of President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard units to cities experiencing spikes in violent crime. Authorities said the shooter, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national, opened fire “ambush-style,” hitting both troops before being shot by another Guardsman who intervened.

Sarah Beckstrom dies, Andrew Wolfe fights for life
Tragically, Beckstrom died of her wounds on Thanksgiving Day, officials confirmed. The 20-year-old, described by loved ones as the “sweetest girl” with a “heart of gold,” hailed from Webster Spring, West Virginia. Friends and family mourned her online, remembering her as someone who “brought light into every room she walked into.”
Wolfe, a Martinsville native, remained in critical condition as of Friday evening, according to West Virginia Gov Patrick Morrisey. “We are praying hard for Andrew and his family,” Morrisey said in a statement. Flags across the state were ordered to fly at half-staff to honor Beckstrom’s sacrifice.
Afghan suspect Rahmanullah Lakanwal identified as shooter
Federal prosecutors said Lakanwal faces first-degree murder and related charges. He was wounded when returning fire ended his rampage. Authorities revealed Lakanwal entered the United States in 2021 after fleeing the war in Afghanistan. He previously served in what officials described as an “elite Afghan military unit with ties to the CIA,” raising questions about his background screening and how he came to be in the nation’s capital.
Attorney General Pam Bondi vowed a swift prosecution, saying she would seek the death penalty. “This was a cold-blooded attack on our service members,” Bondi said. “We will deliver justice.”
Witnesses describe ambush of Beckstrom and Wolfe as chaos
Residents and bystanders told police they heard multiple gunshots, followed by shouting and officers flooding the intersection. The CBS News image shows at least a dozen armed personnel working to treat the fallen soldiers while keeping the shooter secured. One witness said the scene “felt like the city stopped breathing.”
Investigators continue to piece together a motive, though officials described the assault as “targeted” and “unprovoked.” Authorities are also reviewing surveillance footage from nearby buildings and Metro stations.
As the Guard community mourns Beckstrom and hopes for Wolfe’s recovery, tributes continue from across the country. Loved ones said Beckstrom dreamed of building a long military career and “serving the nation she loved.”
