TUCSON, ARIZONA: Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was stabbed by a fellow inmate on Friday, November 24, at the federal prison in Tucson, Arizona where he is serving time for the murder of George Floyd.

Prison officials say Chauvin was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive, as per Daily Mail.

The stabbing occurred around 12.30 pm local time at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, a medium-security facility that has faced security and staffing issues. An inmate attacked Chauvin with a knife, according to a statement from the Bureau of Prisons.

Responding staff members contained the assault and administered “life-saving measures” before Chauvin was transported to a hospital for treatment. His injuries were described as not life-threatening.

Chauvin, 47, was transferred to the Tucson facility in August 2022 from a maximum-security state prison in Minnesota. He is serving a 22-year sentence for second-degree murder in George Floyd’s 2020 death, as well as a concurrent 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights during the deadly arrest.

The high-profile former officer had been largely kept separated from the general inmate population in Minnesota due to safety concerns. But in Arizona, he was housed with the general population at the medium-security facility.

His attorney said Chauvin’s legal team is still working to gather information about the stabbing. No correctional officers were injured in the incident, which temporarily suspended visiting at the prison.

George Floyd’s brother responds to stabbing

Upon hearing the news, Terrence Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, said he felt numb but wouldn’t wish harm on anyone, even Chauvin.

“I’m not gonna give my energy towards anything that happens within those four walls — because my energy went towards getting him in those four walls,” Floyd remarked. “Whatever happens in those four walls, I don’t really have any feelings about it.”

Since his brother’s death, Terrence Floyd has become a prominent advocate for criminal justice reform and civil rights. He serves on the board of the George Floyd Memorial Foundation and founded the nonprofit We Are Floyd to honor his brother’s legacy through community service.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison also issued a statement saying he was “sad to hear that Derek Chauvin was the target of violence” and that he should be able to serve his sentence safely.

Federal Bureau of Prisons' alleged neglect of high-profile inmates

The attack on Chauvin comes amid increased criticism of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for failing to protect high-profile inmates, including wealthy financier Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial.

In July 2022, former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was attacked in a federal Florida prison months into a 60-year sentence for sexually abusing young female athletes. Nassar survived the stabbing.

The Tucson facility itself saw violence a year ago when an inmate pulled out a gun and tried to shoot a visitor. The weapon malfunctioned and no one was injured.

Chauvin was convicted in 2021 of murdering George Floyd in Minneapolis by kneeling on his neck for over nine minutes during an arrest over a counterfeit bill. The killing, captured graphically on video, galvanized nationwide protests over racial injustice and police brutality.

Three other officers were also convicted on state and federal charges for their involvement in Floyd’s death. Chauvin is currently appealing both of his convictions.
