SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA: In a bombshell revelation that has set the Internet abuzz, former President Donald Trump reportedly approached Elon Musk last summer with an offer to sell his struggling social media platform, Truth Social.

According to sources cited by The Washington Post, Musk turned down Trump's multimillion-dollar pitch, dealing a blow to the former president's efforts to salvage his flailing venture.

The news has ignited a firestorm of skepticism and mockery online, with many questioning the relevance and viability of Truth Social amidst its well-documented struggles to gain traction and navigate a complex merger process.

Donald Trump claims he made only $200 from Truth Social venture

At the time, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) was grappling with a protracted and complex merger process, and Trump reportedly claimed he had only made $200 from the venture.

Despite Trump's overtures, Musk ultimately declined the offer to acquire Truth Social, the sources revealed.

When contacted by The Post, Musk cryptically responded, "I've never been to Mar-a-Lago," without directly addressing the Truth Social claims.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson from Trump Media declined to either confirm or refute the allegations. Instead, the spokesperson jokingly remarking to the publication: "We heard Trump and Musk were actually discussing purchasing the Washington Post, but they concluded it held no value."

Donald Trump's bid to sell Truth Social comes amid merger plans

The disclosure of Trump's unsuccessful bid to sell Truth Social to Musk comes amid ongoing turbulence surrounding TMTG's merger plans.

Just a few months after the reported Truth Social offer, TMTG's merger partner, Digital World Acquisition Corp (DWAC), announced its willingness to pay an $18 million settlement to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to facilitate the merger's completion.

The SEC had alleged that DWAC misled investors, jeopardizing the merger's prospects. However, the SEC has since granted permission for DWAC to register the merger, potentially paving the way for TMTG to eventually go public.
