CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA: Social media users are showering praise on University of North Carolina student Dan Stompel after he affirmed that he would protect the American flag with his dead body in a recent interview.

Recently, Stompel and his friends from the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity of the North Carolina university showcased significant courage as they went on to safeguard the American flag from being torn down by a group of Anti-Israel protestors who were hell-bent on hoisting the Palestinian flag in its place.

UNC's Dan Stompel asserts he would protect US flag with his 'dead body'

According to Fox News, Stompel stood his ground alongside his fraternity brothers at a North Carolina campus, defending the American flag against an anti-Israel crowd.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill became a battleground as an anti-Israel mob targeted the American flag, briefly replacing it with a Palestinian one. In response, members of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity came in to defend it.

Stompel told Fox News, "I don't understand how people can act like this."

As a junior majoring in political science, he joined forces with his classmates, holding the flag for over an hour until police dispersed the protest and raised the flag back up. Throughout the ordeal, they endured insults, gestures, and objects hurled by the protesters.

Reflecting on the experience, Stompel shared with Fox News, "We're looking at every direction. If stuff was flying in, we would say, ‘Heads up.’ We would cover each other. We would look out for other people… And it did hurt our arms. It was like an ‘arm day’ for me that day. There was no gym happening that day afterwards. It was exhausting. It was a beautiful moment. It shows that based on the people there, nice, normal, strong boys protecting America's flag. There's nothing more patriotic, nothing more genuine, nothing more inspiring than that."

Asserting his commitment to the country and the flag, Stompel stated, "I was like, ‘I’d die for this flag.' And everybody was like, ‘Yeah.’ If they got any closer that we're going to start throwing hands. We're not going anywhere, I don't care. They're going to have to tear me off this flag over my dead body."

A GoFundMe campaign launched for UNC's Pi Kappa Phi chapter has garnered an impressive $516,672 in support of the fraternity's courageous stand.

Netizens hail Dan Stompel as hero for saving the US flag

A reader wrote online, "The young people defending our flag make me feel optimistic about some of our youth. I'm proud of their actions."

Another said, "God bless this American hero Dan Stompel, and also his brave heroic friends who stood up for our country, and our freedom and values."

A user commented, "As a North Carolinian, I am proud to see these young Men take a stand for what is right, for America and for our Flag. These young Men have demonstrated how American students should act. Well done !"

Someone else noted, "Well done young man! And the same for those who helped you. This is the best thing I’ve read in the three and a half years that Biden has been president. Thank you for standing up for our flag and what it represents 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸."

A user stated, "This fraternity showed a lot more leadership than what we've seen from the White House and our missing in action president. Given the president's record for making big mistakes, it may be good thing that we are not seeing or hearing from the president."

Another said, "Not all heroes wear capes! 🙌."
