WASHINGTON, DC: Former Vice President Kamala Harris has reacted to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s claim that the Trump administration is probing him and his wife, saying that she could believe the claim.

Gavin Newsom on Monday, June 15, claimed that he has landed on Donald Trump’s political “hit list,” with the president directing the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate him and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

Harris says Newsom DOJ probe unsurprising

Former Vice President and potential 2028 presidential candidate Kamala Harris weighed in on Gov Gavin Newsom’s claim that the Trump administration is investigating him and his wife, telling a CNN reporter she was “not surprised” by the allegation.

Speaking at the Austrian World Summit, Harris accused President Donald Trump’s administration of being “the most callous, corrupt, and incompetent presidential administration America has ever experienced,” adding that she had predicted much of its conduct.

Harris also argued that Trump had long signaled his intention to target political opponents, suggesting the reported investigation was consistent with that pattern.

Newsom calls DOJ probe political retaliation

Gavin Newsom, who is also a potential 2028 democratic presidential candidate, claimed that he and his wife are on the Trump administration’s target list.

He also argued that the alleged ongoing probe is an act of political retaliation as he considers a run for president in 2028.

“Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets, he’s coming after me because I’m considering running for president, because he hates that I’ve consistently called him out over and over again for his lies and deceit,” the governor wrote in an X post.

“The President’s abuse of the Justice Department continues, with new targets every day,” said US Sen Adam Schiff (D-Calif).

“The Governor won’t be silenced. Nor will my Senate colleagues. Nor will I. In the face of vindictive and baseless investigations, we are defiant and unbowed.”

Newsom’s office seeks DOJ probe records

Gavin Newsom's office has formally requested records related to a Department of Justice investigation involving the governor and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, alleging the probe is politically motivated.

In a letter sent on Monday to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche's office, Newsom's legal affairs secretary, David Sapp, sought access to a wide range of documents, including memoranda, emails, text messages, and Signal communications connected to the investigation.
