Obamas name Presidential Center restaurant after former personal chef Tafari Campbell who drowned
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS: Nearly three years after his death in a paddleboarding accident near their Martha’s Vineyard home, Barack and Michelle Obama have honored their former personal chef Tafari Campbell by dedicating the main restaurant at the newly opened Obama Presidential Center to him.
The tribute comes as the Obama Presidential Center officially opened in Chicago on June 18, where Tafari’s Kitchen stands as one of the most personal elements of the campus. Campbell had served as a White House sous chef before becoming the Obamas’ personal chef after they left office, maintaining a close connection with the family until his death in July 2023.

The menu has been curated by Chicago chef Cliff Rome and includes dishes inspired by the Obama family’s personal favorites, reflecting Campbell’s long-standing influence in their household.
The Obama Presidential Center also features memorabilia from Barack Obama’s presidency, including a replica of the Oval Office and curated displays highlighting Michelle Obama’s official wardrobe from key state events.
Tafari Campbell’s journey from white house kitchen to personal chef
Campbell began his career as a sous chef in the White House kitchen during Barack Obama’s presidency. Over time, he became a trusted personal chef for the Obama family, continuing to work with them after their departure from Washington.
He was featured in a 2012 White House video showcasing a honey-based beer brewed for the first family using honey collected from Michelle Obama’s beehives, highlighting his role in the household’s informal and personal moments.
The Obama Presidential Center Foundation website describes Campbell as “a warm, fun-loving, and selfless soul, with award-winning culinary talent,” who “used his passion for food to spread joy and create community."
