Las Vegas man who fatally shot 2 women after chasing them down over an argument gets life in prison
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: A Las Vegas judge reprimanded a 38-year-old man, Omar Talley for his lack of remorse before sentencing him to life in prison on Tuesday, January 30 for a 2016 double homicide near the Strip, Las Vegas Review Journal reports.
Talley was convicted of fatally shooting two Northern California women near the Las Vegas Strip almost 8 years ago. He has now been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
What did Omar Talley do?
Talley was convicted in October 2023 of two counts of murder with a deadly weapon and one count of attempted murder.
Talley’s defense attorney however argued that his client had apologized to the victims’ families, but Talley interrupted him to again state that he only expressed his "condolences" and claimed he was not involved in the killings.
According to court documents, Talley was previously facing the death penalty in this case; however, before his trial started, prosecutors decided against pursuing the death penalty.
He was accused of 27-years-old killing Melissa Yvette Mendoza and Jennifer Margarita Chicas of the same age and wounding Chicas’ brother-in-law, Jerraud Jackson, in February 2016.
According to the relatives of the victims, the women were in Las Vegas for a family celebration. Jackson survived the shooting and testified against Talley.
How did Omar Talley kill the victims?
Shots were fired during an incident between the victims and Talley that occurred in a parking garage west of the Strip, according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, Fox News reports.
Chicas and Mendoza, who were both from the San Francisco Bay region, died from chest gunshot wounds.
Talley claimed to officers he had been drinking and consuming marijuana the night of the shootings and had not remembered much of what had happened.
Talley was sentenced to a Nevada jail in 2010 for felony child abuse offenses and pandering to a child. He was granted parole in 2015.
