One dead, 5 injured in mass shooting few miles away from White House while Joe Biden was honoring Japanese PM

WASHINGTON, DC: A flurry of gunshots left one man dead and five others, including two children, injured in the nation's capital on Wednesday, April 10.

According to Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith, the shooting occurred in the Washington, DC neighborhood of Carver Langston shortly after 6 in the evening.

Suspect started shooting into street crowd

The tragic scene unfolded about eight miles from the White House, where President Joe Biden was hosting a state dinner in honor of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

The suspect, according to investigators, got out of a car and started shooting into the street crowd. There were several gunshot victims. An adult male victim lost his life as a result.

A 9-year-old, a woman, and two men were transported to nearby hospitals by means of ambulance. Later, a 12-year-old who was reportedly among the victims of the shooting showed up at a hospital with a gunshot wound, according to Smith.

The shooting occurs at a time when violent crime is on the rise in the District of Columbia, having increased by 39% in 2023.

The growth in carjackings, which almost doubled, and a 35% increase in homicides were the main causes of the increase. Smith has pushed legislators to enact laws that would make gun crimes in the nation's capital more serious, according to New York Post.

Police department identified the car used in incident

The police department has identified the car used by the suspect during the incident and has requested the public to provide information.

The department posted the details on X, stating, "Urgent: MPD searching for this vehicle in reference to the shooting on 21st Street NE. Have info? Immediately call 202-727-9099 or text 50411."



 

After receiving the tragic news, users conveyed condolences for the victims and their suffering families. "My Condolences To The Family And Friend's Of The Victims... May Their Family Receive Supernatural Strength During This Most Difficult Time... " a tweet read.



 

Another user questioned the authorities, "Two people for out of the car and you have no descriptions of the perps? Why not?"



 

"Very light on the perp descriptions. Should we guess why?" wondered someone else.
