Internet wants 'big money out of politics' as Sam Altman donates to hundreds of Dems and one Republican
WASHINGTON, DC: Over the last few years, Sam Altman has donated to hundreds of Democratic politicians and one Republican, as per Newsweek. Their analysis reveals that since 2013, the CEO of OpenAI has continuously contributed to Democratic lawmakers.
According to statistics from Open Secrets, Altman donated more than $1 million to local Democratic groups around the nation and to politicians in his own California. Additionally, he donated to Joe Biden's 2020 campaign and Barack Obama's 2012 campaign.
Stats show Sam Altman donated to hundreds of Democrats, and one Republican
However, Congressman Patrick McHenry of North Carolina is the only Republican to have received a donation from Sam Altman in the last several years.
The federal cap for individual contributions to congressional races is $2700, which Altman gave to McHenry in 2018. Altman has never resided in North Carolina; he was born in Illinois and is presently a resident of California.
Before rising to the position of ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee in 2019 and head of the committee following the 2022 midterm elections, McHenry was the top deputy whip for the House Republicans at the time of the donation.
After Kevin McCarthy was removed from office in October 2023, McHenry also held the position of Speaker of the House pro tempore.
Since then, Altman has given Democratic lawmakers in many states more than $1 million in donations. His contributions total more than McHenry's $2,700, which is the maximum amount that may be given to a single political campaign.
Altman has donated to some well-known politicians, including Andrew Yang, Elizabeth Warren, Gavin Newson, Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and Joe Biden.
Moreover, he has also contributed to local Democratic politicians in California, where Altman resides. The same $2,700 was given to Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, and congressional candidates Josh Harder, Harley Rouda, and Brian Forde.
Although the majority of his donations go to California, Altman has also backed politicians in states along the East Coast, including New York and Virginia.
He donated to Justin Brown's 2015 campaign in the Virginia House of Delegates, and he helped James Gauhran's 2018 campaign for the New York State Senate, which was successful.
Internet divided over Sam Altman's donation to hundreds of Democrats, and one Republican

Some online comments read "Hopefully his bribes don't keep politicians from regulating his sketchy product" and "Good to know, now Trump can add him to that special list of people he needs to pay extra attention after he wins in November. Open AI needs to be regulated."
A person wrote, "Sounds about right, the elite donate to Democrats and the working class donate Republican", while another added, "Sounds like that Fryed dude, when are the politicians going to give that stolen money back? Get Big Money out of politics."
