Oscars 2024 slammed online for 'boring' viewers as sparkly Ken and naked John Cena barely manage to impress
LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA: The 2024 Oscars kicked off five minutes behind schedule, setting the tone for an underwhelming evening.
It is after all Hollywood's biggest award night and all eyes were on the stage to see which of their favorite stars and movies gets to take home the golden statuette.
While the event on Sunday, March 10, did showcase some deserving and heartwarming winners, such as Ryan Gosling's rendition of 'I'm Just Ken' in a bedazzled pink tuxedo and John Mulaney's tight three-minute stand-up routine on 'Field of Dreams', it failed to capture the grandeur expected of Hollywood's biggest night.
Even the unexpected appearance of John Cena on stage albeit naked, as a presenter for the Best Costume Award, couldn't generate enough buzz to keep viewers interested.
Oscars 2024 felt too long
According to USA Today, the Oscars show was very long. Even though it started an hour earlier than usual because of Daylight Saving Sunday, it apparently still felt too long. One viewer expressed their annoyance via a GIF that reflected their boredom, "Oscar's (sic) so boring bro this is taking forever."

It ended around 10.30 pm EDT. People felt there was too much of Jimmy Kimmel, and the introductions for the presenters were too long. If an online viewer, also apparently a Donald Trump supporter, is to be believed: "I didn't watch the Oscars because I'd rather have my teeth pulled out with pliers but I love that Jimmy Kimmel is so boring the only way to make the audience laugh was to read Donald Trump's Truth Social post!"

Best part of Oscars 2024
The evening's highlights largely leaned toward modest rather than groundbreaking.
There were a few instances during the night which piqued the audience's interest.
For example, Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling talked about 'Barbenheimer', a big movie from the summer.
Also, Kimmel showed support for the writers’ and actors’ strikes, and the union IATSE and 'Barbie' star Ryan Gosling's performance in a bedazzled pink outfit was very entertaining.
That said, montages were refreshingly scarce, and even the comedic interludes, while present, didn't overstay their welcome as they sometimes do. John Cena's clever and succinct presentation of the costume award, where he humorously appeared to be naked, showcased his unique ability to execute such humor with style.
Not all was plain and boring as USA Today makes it out to be, as in fact, Daily Beast in their review calls it 'the best telecast in years'.
They argued that Trump tweeting about the Oscars was the 'greatest endorsement' the event could get and Kimmel ripping him apart on national television was entertaining, to say the least.
What didn't click at Oscars 2024?
While Kimmel may have been called the 'worst host' by Trump, his sidekick Guillermo too failed to bring out the laughs.
Comedian Guillermo Rodriguez, a regular on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' mispronounced John Krasinski and Colman Domingo’s names all the while passing drinks to the audience. This needlessly prolonged the length of the show.
Lily Gladstone losing the best actress award to Emma Stone also met with a lot of protests online, with X users calling Gladstone's Oscar loss a 'robbery'.
Speaking of protest, Billie Eilish, Ava DuVernay, Mark Ruffalo, and Ramy Youssef wore red pins to the 96th Academy Awards in support of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
Before and during the red carpet, pro-Palestinian protesters blocked traffic in front of the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. They shouted at fans and stars alike: “Ceasefire now! Free Palestine.”
Internet slams Oscar show for getting worse every year
When it comes to the online audience, however, they differed from what most websites had to say about the award night.
The internet slammed the Oscar show, with many criticizing it for being dull. One user commented, "The Oscars have been a snoozefest since the early 2000s." Another agreed, saying, "I agree. Such a woke borefest."
The third user remarked, "No one watches these clowns give themselves awards."
One disappointed user said, "It literally does not reward the best movies. It's a farce. I have no idea why stars continue to support it. Layer Cake is a great example of a movie that was totally snubbed by the Oscars. Unreal."
Another user added, "The Oscars just keep getting worse every year #Oscars." Someone concluded, "Worst Oscars ever."
