LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In a bold and humorous opening monologue at this year's Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel didn't shy away from taking shots at Republican Senator Katie Britt. Kimmel playfully suggested that Britt possesses the 'brain of a child', drawing a clever parallel to Emma Stone's character in the film 'Poor Things'.

According to Dailymail, Referencing Stone's award-winning portrayal of Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos' movie, Kimmel teased the audience about Britt's recent misstep during her State of the Union rebuttal.

Jimmy Kimmel's witty jabs at Senator Katie Britt's controversial rebuttal

The 56-year-old ate-night host humorously drew parallels between Stone's character and the Alabama senator's controversial response.

"Emma played an adult woman with the brain of a child, like the lady who gave the rebuttal to the State of the Union on Thursday night," Kimmel quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.

Britt's rebuttal, which turned out to be a disaster, included a story of a 12-year-old trafficking victim that sparked outrage due to its outdated nature.

Standing in her kitchen, Britt recounted the tale to emphasize the border crisis under President Joe Biden's administration. However, reports soon surfaced that the incident had occurred in Mexico in 2004, during George W Bush's presidency.

"Well, I very clearly said I spoke to a woman who told me about when she was trafficked when she was 12," Britt defended when asked about her remarks on Fox News Sunday. "So I didn't say a teenager, I didn't say a young woman. A grown woman – a woman – when she was trafficked when she was 12."

Katie Britt stood her ground

During an appearance on Fox News Sunday, the 42-year-old Republican stood her ground, admitting that the story wasn't current but refusing to back down. Despite the backlash, Britt defended her choice of words, emphasizing that the woman she spoke to had been trafficked at the age of 12.

"We wouldn't be OK with this happening in a third-world country. This is the United States of America, and it's past time we start acting like it," Britt asserted during her 18-minute-long response.

The incident quickly became fodder for criticism, with journalists highlighting the disparity between Britt's account and the real-life experience of Karla Jacinto Romero, a trafficking survivor who later became an advocate for victims.

Divided opinions within the GOP

Former Fox News and NBC host Megyn Kelly expressed disappointment: "Britt embarrassed herself, she embarrassed Republicans, and she embarrassed women." Even within her own party, Britt faced rebuke. Scarlett Johansson humorously dubbed her the 'craziest b**ch in the Target parking lot' on 'Saturday Night Live'.

Britt continues to garner support from some prominent Republicans. Former President Donald Trump endorsed her during the 2022 primaries, solidifying her status as a rising star within the GOP.

"Congratulations to my friend and colleague for showing Texans and Americans what Republicans really stand for - a strong economy, secure border, and good jobs for every American," praised Texas Senator Ted Cruz on X.

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham called her response 'dynamite,' adding that she was "absolutely spot-on."

However, critics like former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh labeled her comments as "despicable." "She sat in front of the American people and she lied to us about a very serious problem," Walsh emphasized.

Mixed reviews and accusations of misogyny

As Jimmy Kimmel's Oscar monologue sparked both amusement and controversy, social media became a battleground for opinions.

One user wrote, "So much misogyny coming from the Left these days."

Another added, "Jimmy is still a misogynist. Hasn't changed a bit."

One commented, "And they wonder why so many people don’t watch them anymore. Can’t we have something without politics being dragged into it?"

One user replied, "It was better than old man yelling."

Another said, "Unprofessional commentary from an overrated talk show host."
