MOSCOW, RUSSIA: Fox News host turned internet pundit Tucker Carlson has stoked outrage and backlash online after announcing plans to personally interview Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Carlson claims the sit-down, which would mark the first such interview by a major U.S. media figure since Russia invaded Ukraine, is necessary to inform poorly educated Americans about the ongoing conflict, as per Daily Mail.

However, critics rapidly accused Carlson of providing an uncritical platform to amplify Russian propaganda and legitimize Putin's brutal aggression.

Tucker Carlson wants American public to learn 'all they can' about the war

In a video statement filmed in Moscow, Carlson stated the interview will air 'unedited' on his website without a paywall so that the American public can learn "all they can" about a war they are 'implicated in'. He accused English-language media outlets of corruption and lying to their audiences.

"Two years into a war that's reshaping the entire world, most Americans are not informed. They have no real idea what's happening in this region. But they should know, they're paying for much of it in ways they might not fully perceive," said Carlson.

However, the timing and specifics of the interview remain shrouded in mystery, with Carlson failing to disclose when the sit-down will be aired. Russian state media outlet Sputnik added fuel to the speculation by broadcasting footage on Monday, February 5, claiming to capture Carlson's car leaving the Kremlin.

Tucker Carlson claims Western governments will 'certainly do their best to censor' the interview

Carlson preemptively rejected the criticism against his decision, claiming Western governments will "certainly do their best to censor this video." He alleged, without evidence, that the Biden administration had previously spied on him to block an earlier attempt at a Putin interview.

"We are not here because we love Vladimir Putin. We are here because we love the United States and want it to remain prosperous and free. Western governments, by contrast, will certainly do their best to censor this video and other less principled platforms because that’s what they do," Carlson explained.

"But this time, we came to Moscow anyway," Carlson declared, stating he self-funded the trip. Carlson also claimed billionaire Elon Musk, the new owner of X (formerly Twitter), had promised not to block the dissemination of his Putin interview on that platform.

Internet erupts with criticism to Tucker Carlson's announcement of interview

In response to Carlson's announcement of the exclusive interview with Putin, the online community swiftly voiced criticism and skepticism. One user on X remarked, "Interview a liar, and you will get lies." Another user sarcastically commented, "Yeah, Tuckums. Feed Americans some of that good old Russian propaganda."

A third user expressed disdain, simply labeling the situation as "Pathetic," while another individual voiced concerns about the potential consequences, stating, "This is dangerous. No good will come of it." Adding a touch of skepticism, a fifth user quipped, "Yeah...two liars gonna tell the truth."

Lastly, a sixth user delivered a pointed critique, highlighting Carlson's perceived bias, "This Carlson guy is so high on the Russian propaganda machine. If he is the journalist he claims to be 'just doing our job', he’d arrange an interview with Zelensky and put both interviews out at the same time to provide balance and allow people to make up their own minds."
