CHEYENNE, WYOMING: Former Rep Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) responded to former President Donald Trump's baseless claims regarding the House January 6th Committee "suppressing" evidence. Trump had called for her prosecution over this.

According to Mediaite, Trump reposted an article from the far-right website The Federalist and stated, “SHE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR WHAT SHE HAS DONE TO OUR COUNTRY! SHE ILLEGALLY DESTROYED THE EVIDENCE. UNREAL!!!”

Liz Cheney retweeted Trump’s explosive post and remarked, “Lying in all caps doesn’t make it true, Donald. You know you and your lawyers have long had the evidence.”

What prompted Liz Cheney to fire back at former POTUS?

On Saturday, March 16, Trump also shared a piece by far-right writer John Solomon, who alleged the Jan 6 committee "withheld crucial evidence" and suggested that Cheney "should go to jail along with the rest of the Unselect Committee!"

The Federalist's editor-in-chief Mollie Hemingway published an "exclusive" article on March 8 titled 'Liz Cheney, January 6 Committee Suppressed Exonerating Evidence Of Trump's Push For National Guard', which is the source of the allegation that Cheney and the January 6th Committee concealed evidence.

According to Hemingway's article, "Cheney's January 6 Committee suppressed evidence that President Donald Trump pushed for 10,000 National Guard troops to protect the nation's capital, a previously hidden transcript obtained by The Federalist shows."

The evidence in dispute from the article alleges, “Deputy Chief of Staff Anthony Ornato’s first transcribed interview with the committee was conducted on January 28, 2022. In it, he told Cheney and her investigators that he overheard White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows push Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser to request as many National Guard troops as she needed to protect the city.”

"Not only did the committee not accurately characterize the interview, they suppressed the transcript from public review," Hemingway continues.

It's worth noting that the transcript of Ornato's testimony was made public in 2022 and is currently available on the Internet.

Since Ornato was the former Secret Service agent responsible for former President Trump's protection, his testimony could only be made public in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, and some redactions were made for security reasons.

Hemingway's article appears to have originated from this transcript, but Tom Joscelyn of JustSecurity has thoroughly exposed Hemingway's claim that Ornato's testimony was "previously hidden" or "suppressed".

Joscelyn contended that Hemingway “did not inform readers of the agreement between the Secret Service and the January 6th Committee” adding that The Federalist’s editor-in-chief “falsely led readers to believe something sinister was afoot” given the security measures undertaken ahead of the release of said transcript.

Moreover, Cheney's tweet mentions that Trump and his attorneys “have long had the evidence,” alluding to the Department of Justice providing Trump access to all transcripts and supporting documentation provided to the Secret Service and DHS in August 2023.

Furthermore, the exchange that Hemingway describes between Mayor Bowser and Meadows is present in the committee's Ornato transcript, but it does not conflict with the committee's final report from January 6. That report notes that Trump proposed stationing 10,000 troops in DC prior to January 6th in order to defend himself and his allies.

Trump has long leveled outrageous claims against former House Speaker Rep Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.), claiming that she was instigating the attack on the US Capitol on January 6 because she turned down his request for the National Guard's assistance.

The final committee report also determined that Trump never issued such an order, citing under-oath evidence from his own acting Defense Secretary, Christopher Miller.

Hemingway's original article has been extensively circulated and aggregated in right-leaning media, including Fox News, Newsmax, and various conspiracy theory websites such as The Gateway Pundit.

Internet chastises Trump for claiming Cheney be prosecuted over concealing evidence

People on X lambasted the former President for surpassing all existing decorum and decency deemed necessary for a statesman when propagating unsubstantiated, conspiratorial articles on the Internet to get a leg-up over a political opponent or rally his ever-ardent followers to make someone's life a living hell.

One X user remarked: "It's tough to constantly have to defend your lies."

Another user said: "His cult sure thinks it does."

Another user wrote: "Hostages lmfao they’re criminals bottom line."

One user quipped: "To be fair, he doesn't know how to write or punctuate, so he has to capitalize every word."

Another X user claimed: "Liz retains her political power because she speaks as an advocate for the corporatist interests that actually run this country. Not the people."

Finally, this user tweeted: "Whenever Trump is simply breathing, he’s lying for that matter; it’s his “primal instinct” for a pathological liar such as him, making it impossible for him to tell the truth."
