WASHINGTON, DC: Representative Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) referred to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and former President Donald Trump's joint press conference on 'election integrity' as "absurd" on Friday, April 12, in light of Trump's pending charges for meddling in the 2020 election.

Swalwell said during an appearance on CNN's 'Anderson Cooper 360', "I mean, it’s too rich that Donald Trump and Mike Johnson are talking to us about election integrity. That’s like having to listen to a lecture by Bonnie and Clyde on bank security. I mean, it’s absurd considering what they did in the 2020 election to try and overturn it."

Earlier on Friday, at a press conference held at the former president's Mar-a-Lago estate, Johnson praised the legislation that would prohibit noncitizens from voting without authorization.

Notably, foreign nationals are already prohibited from participating in any federal election under the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. Yet, a small number of jurisdictions let noncitizens to cast ballots in municipal and school board elections.

Referring to the laws discussed during the press conference, Swalwell informed Cooper, "They’re going after something that is already illegal, and by the way, it’s not a thing."

The combined appearance coincides with opposition to Mike Johnson from Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who claims Johnson is unfit to continue as Speaker and wants him removed. At the press conference, former President Trump endorsed the Speaker, stating that Johnson was "doing a really good job under very tough circumstances."
