KYIV, UKRAINE: Prince Harry made an unannounced visit to Ukraine on Thursday, April 23, expressing solidarity with the country as it continues to resist Russia’s invasion.

Addressing the Kyiv Security Forum, he praised Ukraine for “bravely and successfully defending Europe’s eastern flank.”

Royal calls for American leadership to support Ukraine

In a pointed message, Harry underscored the unique responsibility of the United States in supporting Ukraine. Referring to past security assurances given when Ukraine relinquished its nuclear arsenal, he said Washington must step up.

“This is a moment for American leadership,” he said, urging the US to honor its international commitments not as charity, but as part of its global strategic role.

Harry acknowledged Europe’s significant contributions to Ukraine’s defense but stressed that the pace of support must increase.

“Europe has stood up in profound ways… The task now is to match endurance with speed,” he said, highlighting the urgency of continued assistance.

Accusations of war crimes against Russia

Describing the conflict as a broader ideological struggle between democracies and authoritarian regimes, Harry accused Russia of serious violations of international law.

He pointed to the alleged deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia as a potential war crime.

“Such actions are not just war crimes, they can constitute acts of genocide when intended to erase a people’s identity,” he said.

This marks Harry’s third visit to Ukraine since the 2022 invasion. During the trip, he is expected to meet Ukrainian participants of the Invictus Games Foundation, which supports wounded service personnel through sport.

He will also visit HALO Trust, a charity long associated with his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

Harry’s visit comes amid growing concern that global attention is shifting away from Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently warned that delaying efforts to end the war due to other geopolitical crises poses a “big risk” to Ukraine’s future.

He warned that any slowdown in international backing could embolden aggression and prolong the conflict, with consequences far beyond Eastern Europe.

Stressing the interconnected nature of global security, he said instability in Ukraine would reverberate across alliances and institutions.

Echoing concerns raised by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Harry urged partners to maintain focus, arguing that sustained pressure and unity remain critical to securing a just and lasting peace.
