Reese Witherspoon mourns James Van Der Beek ahead of his final role in ‘Legally Blonde’ prequel
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Reese Witherspoon is mourning James Van Der Beek, who died on Wednesday, February 11. The actor was 48 and had been battling colorectal cancer since August 2023.
The ‘Varsity Blues’ star will be seen on screen in the upcoming ‘Legally Blonde’ prequel Amazon series ‘Elle’, whose executive producer is Witherspoon.
Calling Beek “an extraordinary, talented man,” the actress wrote on social media, “Devastated to hear about James Van Der Beek,” who “showed great kindness and grace in every action.”

“Praying all the angels watch over his family during this difficult time,” ‘The Morning Show’ star added.
‘Elle’ is scheduled to release on July 1 and it will show Beek as Dean Wilson — “the city’s new Mayoral candidate and current school district superintendent.”

Meanwhile, Beek’s death was announced by his wife of 15 years, Kimberly. In an Instagram post, she shared, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.”
“There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come,” the statement noted, but also requested privacy.
It added: “For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Below that post also, Witherspoon commented, “Sending all my angels to help carry him home 🕊️you and your beautiful family are in my heart 💗.”
James Van Der Beek's friends set up GoFundMe for his family
The ‘Dawson's Creek’ star has left behind his wife and their six minor children — Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, 8, Gwendolyn, 6, and Jeremiah, 3. A GoFundMe has been launched for them amid the difficult time.
The message on the fundraiser read, “In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds.”
“They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead,” it stated.
The page also asked for generosity from donors as it added, “Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them.”
