SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI: Riley Strain was honored at a celebration of life as family and friends gathered in his hometown of Springfield, Missouri, to pay tribute to him.

The memorial service was held on Friday, March 29, a week after the University of Missouri student's body was found in the Cumberland River in Nashville, Tennessee, according to People.

High school friend says Riley Strain 'always found a way to make others smile'

Strain's loved ones took the opportunity to celebrate his life and cherished the memories they shared with the 22-year-old boy.

The service was filled with music, including a song that reminded the late university student's parents of him and also a track that made his childhood friends think of him.

Among the attendees who spoke at the service was Strain's high school friend, Joey Cockell.

"One lesson I learned from Riley is to always stay in the present and don't overthink," he shared.

"He always told me to be in the moment, and everything else will come."

"Riley always found a way to make others smile," said Cockell, adding "I can't put into words how much I miss hearing his voice. Without Riley, I'm lost."

How did Riley Strain die?

According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, Strain was last seen at a Broadway bar in Tennessee.

TC Restaurant Group, which oversees country singer Luke Bryan's restaurant and bar 32 Bridge Food + Drink, stated that Strain was asked to leave the place.

The 22-year-old then appeared on multiple surveillance cameras and was later seen walking towards a bridge.

Investigators shared that the "preliminary autopsy showed no apparent signs of foul play and his death continues to appear accidental."

Riley Strain's mother Michelle Whiteid, spoke out after his body was found

Thanking those who assisted in locating her son, Strain's mother Michelle Whiteid urged other parents to "hug your babies tight tonight, please."

"Please, for me," she added.



 

Remembered as having a “deep care for the community and the environment," Strain's obituary shared that he "cherished time spent with family, creating lasting memories."

"Riley Strain’s presence will be profoundly missed, but his joyous approach to life and the happiness he brought to those around him will forever be remembered," read the tribute.

Internet sends condolences as Riley Strain's loved ones gather at his celebration of life

As Strain's family gathered at his memorial service, netizens paid tribute to the young adult.

"So sad and such a mystery," a user wrote on X (formerly Twitter) and another individual remarked, "So sad. He should be alive."
