Robert Lee death: Teen charged with fatally shooting Detroit man who posed as teenage girl to lure potential predators

DETROIT, MICHIGAN: A 17-year-old boy has been charged with fatally shooting a Detroit man in September during a heated argument in a restaurant.
The 40-year-old man, Robert Wayne Lee, had been posing as a teenage girl on social media in an attempt to catch sexual predators, but his actions were unauthorized.
Following the shooting incident, police arrested two males, aged 17 and 18, for the killing of Lee from Pontiac, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Karen McDonald, the Oakland County Prosecutor, revealed the charges of homicide, carrying a hidden weapon, and using a firearm during a felony.
McDonald's office stated that there is no proof linking the shooting to any "sting" operation conducted by Robert Wayne Lee II.
Notably, the teen's trial will begin in the following week as per Detroit Free Times.
What happened to Robert Lee?
Robert Lee, known as "Boopac Shakur" on social media, played a pivotal role leading to charges against several men, including a jail deputy.
However, his work also mistakenly identified one person as a sexual predator, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard clarified that Lee encountered an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old at a restaurant in Pontiac, approximately 30 miles northwest of Detroit.
Amid a dispute between Lee and the 18-year-old, the 17-year-old brandished a firearm and shot Lee while they were at the table. Lee was subsequently pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities didn't reveal the names of the suspects. The case has been handed over to the Oakland County prosecutor’s office, which will decide on charges, Bouchard mentioned.
What did Michael Bouchard claim about Robert Lee?
According to AP news, Michael Bouchard stated that they are investigating whether the shooting was related to Lee’s efforts to identify sexual predators.
Certain online videos portray Lee and others confronting individuals whom they suspect to be sexual predators in public settings.
In an interview, Lee mentioned that sexual predators often utilize cell phones to contact their victims, likening it to the old tactic of luring children with candy in a van.
One of Lee’s videos from 2022 led to the arrest of a jail deputy who attempted to arrange a meeting with someone he believed to be a 15-year-old girl.
Bouchard noted that the deputy was terminated as soon as they became aware of the video. However, he also cautioned against confronting alleged predators.
While he agreed with Lee's sentiment, he stressed the importance of understanding the distinction between criminal behavior and simply being reprehensible.
He highlighted that individuals attempting to expose sexual predators may underestimate the potential danger involved, as some predators become violent when apprehended by law enforcement.
Cody Larson, 28, from Waterford, Michigan, expressed his desire, along with others, to continue Lee's work. He admired Lee's actions and considered it an important cause.
Larson recounted an incident from May when he and Lee confronted a suspected sexual predator outside a store in Pontiac.
The man appeared surprised and asked for forgiveness, although Larson believes he was not charged with a crime. Larson emphasized that their intention is not to harm anyone but rather to understand why individuals think such behavior is acceptable.
