MIDLAND, TEXAS: As per Fox News, a 50-year-old man with a history of five deportations was arrested and charged in relation to the tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a 10-year-old boy in Texas.
Rogelio Ortiz was taken into custody by the Midland Police Department last week and is facing charges for his alleged involvement in a fatal hit-and-run accident.
The victim, identified by his school as Alex Wise, was fatally struck in the incident. Further details regarding the hit-and-run scene and the circumstances leading to the boy's death have been disclosed as part of the ongoing investigation.
What happened to Alex Wise?
Alex Wise tragically passed away the next day after being airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
This occurred subsequent to Rogelio Ortiz striking Wise with a black truck on February 08 in the 1900 block of South Lamesa Road in Midland, located approximately 320 miles northwest of San Antonio.
The individual in question, Ortiz, had an immigration detainer and had been deported on at least five separate occasions.
His identity was confirmed through fingerprints obtained during his initial removal. Additionally, according to the Midland County Sheriff's Office, Ortiz is also facing a charge of driving while intoxicated (DWI).
Alex Wise’s aunt launched a GoFundMe to raise funds for his funeral costs
The boy's aunt set up a GoFundMe to cover Wise's funeral expenses. As of Sunday, Feb. 18, the GoFundMe has received over $24,378 in donations.
"AJ was the sweetest, coolest, funniest little boy you ever would meet," Wise's aunt wrote.
One donor contributed $10, mentioning he was Wise's friend. Wise attended IDEA Travis.
"I knew Alex he was my friend, he was a really great friend [and] always tried to make everyone laugh and smile he was always happy and made everyone’s day."
"We all really miss him… even the people that barely knew him cried that sad day because he was amazing to everyone. He was so nice and caring and was just a great kid and a great friend, we miss you Alex a lot, fly high."
IDEA Travis and the Midland Independent School District shared their condolences after the "tragic" incident.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family and loved ones. Counselors will be providing mental health support for students and staff on campus. As the safety of our students continues to be our number one priority, we are urging drivers to exercise caution when pedestrians are present to prevent tragedies."
