Ryan Reynolds opens up about his upcoming 50th birthday
While attending the 'Mayday' premiere at the Lincoln Center AMC in New York City on Monday, August 31, Reynolds spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about how his family celebrates birthdays. He admitted that he does not particularly enjoy birthdays and would not want a major extravaganza for his milestone celebration.
“I don’t like birthdays. I mean, I’m fine with it,” Reynolds said while adding, “I don’t bemoan a birthday, but I’m not like, ‘Hey, let’s have a huge party for me. I’m good. I get enough attention. I was just on a red carpet. This is plenty.”
During an interview with Entertainment Tonight alongside his 'Mayday' co-star Kenneth Branagh, Reynolds also joked about having cosmetic work done ahead of turning 50. Gesturing toward his face, he joked, “This is scaffolding.”
Reynolds then added, “I had my lips done this morning and at lunch.” Branagh joined the bit, joking that “they got it right” on the “second” try.
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s ‘Birthday Alley’ runs through Christmas
The candid comments come after Reynolds celebrated his wife Blake Lively’s 39th birthday on August 25. He marked the occasion by sharing several photos of himself and Lively on Instagram, writing, “August 25th is this family’s Super Bowl."
“Happy Birthday to the very best human I know. You’re not just another courageous and deeply kind genius. You’re also unreasonably cute. I know how lucky I am that you were born. Every time I’ve ever hit my head, it’s YOUR life that flashes before my eyes," he added.
Every year, Reynolds and Lively celebrate their birthdays and the birthdays of three of their four children within an 113-day window. James turns 12 in December, Inez turns 10 in September, and Betty turns 7 in October, while their son Olin’s fourth birthday is in February.
The couple also celebrates their wedding anniversary on September 9. Reynolds said, “I’m in Birthday Alley. My kids, we have about four of our family members all just back-to-back to back-to-back, It’s Birthday Alley, and it goes right on into Christmas. Ceaseless.”
“Basically, yeah, to my 50th birthday. I mean, crazy. I’m mostly breathing in helium all day, filling balloons, emptying balloons, filling more balloons. That is Birthday Alley,” he added.
