ATLANTA, GEORGIA: During a hearing at Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia on Friday, March 1, lawyers representing former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants accused Fani Willis, the district attorney, of concealing her relationship with Special Prosecutor Nathan Wade and withholding the truth in a bid to retain her position.

The defendants, who are facing charges of interfering in the 2020 presidential election, have been seeking to have Willis removed from their case, per the New York Post.

The allegations against Willis involve her hiring of her ex-partner, Nathan Wade, as a Special Prosecutor, which the defendants argue creates a conflict of interest.

What did Trump's lawyers say about DA Fani Willis on Friday?

During Friday’s hearing, Attorney John Merchant argued, “She put her boyfriend in the spot, paid him and then reaped the benefits from him.”

Under oath, Willis and Wade have asserted that their relationship began in 2022 and ended the following year. However, the lawyers representing Trump and his co-defendants argue that it started in 2019.

Attorney Richard Rice asserted, “They want you to ignore all evidence the relationship started in 2019.”

He cited Wade's phone records, which revealed that the pair exchanged 2,000 calls and roughly 900 texts in the first 11 months of 2021.

“I don’t think even lovestruck teenagers communicate that much,” Rice claimed.

Text messages provided by Terrence Bradley, Wade's former legal partner, turned into crucial evidence when it seemed from one of his messages that the connection had begun prior to Wade's appointment as prosecutor in 2021.

In closing arguments, Fulton County District Attorney's Office prosecutor Adam Abbate asserted that Bradley "was unable to specify a timeframe during which the relationship took place."

The prosecutor also noted, “Mr Bradley had every motive to lie,” after leaving Wade's law firm on suspicion of sexual assault.

Abbate stated that Trump's side has not demonstrated an "actual conflict" that would justify dismissing Willis from the lawsuit.

One of the pivotal issues in the case revolves around whether the defendants, including Trump, must demonstrate a real conflict of interest or merely the appearance of one.

While Wade attended the entire hearing, Willis only appeared as Abbate was ready to present his argument, leaving the proceedings promptly after Abbate concluded his presentation.

Trump's attorney, Steve Sadow, insisted in his response, “Who’s motive in this case is the strongest? Fani Willis and Nathan Wade. Because . . . what happens if the relationship started before November 2021? They get disqualified . . . Who has the most at stake to lie? They do.”

Judge John McAfee said he hopes to rule within the next two weeks.
