Sen Mark Warner walks out of Trump’s State of the Union: 'I couldn’t sit through hours of lies'

WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Mark Warner abruptly walked out of President Donald Trump’s lengthy State of the Union address.

He accused the president of delivering a speech filled with lies and said he chose to stand by his principles rather than listen to what he described as falsehoods. The protest underscored the deep divide in Congress and became one of the most striking moments of the evening.

Mark Warner exits Trump's SOTU

Warner’s departure came before the nearly two-hour speech concluded.

In a later social media post, the Virginia Democrat said he “couldn’t sit through hours of Trump’s lies,” offering a blunt assessment of an address that drew sharp criticism from Democrats for its length and content. “Walked out of the State of the Union because I couldn’t sit through hours of Trump’s lies,” the senator wrote on Bluesky.

“Americans know the truth: he’s spiking prices and wrecking our economy. We’re a better country than this.” Warner exited far more quietly than Representatives Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).

As Trump boasted about his crackdown on undocumented immigrants, Tlaib, alluding to Renee Good and Alex Pretti, shouted, “They saw the videos, Mr president!”

Trump’s 2026 State of the Union address, the longest in modern history, spanned a wide range of policy goals, including immigration, economic performance, national security, and domestic priorities.

However, for Warner and other Democrats, the speech focused more on political rhetoric than on bringing people together.

Trump sets record with longest State address

Clocking in at one hour and 48 minutes, Trump’s address set a record as the longest State of the Union ever delivered.

During the speech, Trump claimed that Democrats cannot be legitimately elected. He also took credit for ending eight wars, celebrated the US men’s hockey team, and praised Erika Kirk.

At several points, he raised his voice toward Democrats in attendance, took jabs at Representative Nancy Pelosi, criticized Supreme Court justices directly, and discussed gasoline prices.
