AUSTIN, TEXAS: In recent developments in the case involving Texas shooting suspect Shane James, 34, newly-revealed court documents provide intricate details about the alleged break-in at a residence where a woman and her daughter with "special needs" were fatally shot.
The documents also shed light on the suspect's attempt to escape from jail, which was promptly thwarted.
To provide context, James stands accused of a series of killings that occurred across Texas, spanning from San Antonio to Austin.
He was apprehended on Tuesday night, December 6, and is slated to remain in custody until the trial.
The shooting spree, terrorizing multiple communities, culminated when James crashed his car during a police pursuit on Tuesday evening. Importantly, James has a documented history of mental health issues and violent episodes, having been previously arrested on charges of assaulting family members.
What happened in jail?
As per a probable cause affidavit and information from a spokeswoman for the Travis County Sheriff’s Office, Shane James, 34, was confined to a room in the Travis County Jail on Wednesday subsequent to his arrest on Tuesday night.
During this time, he reportedly pushed past a corrections officer, but his attempt was thwarted as he was apprehended in the hallway by deputies who used force to subdue him.
Addressing the security measures of the jail, spokeswoman Kristen Dark clarified on Friday that the facility is a multi-floor, secure facility, and James was unable to escape the floor or the building itself during the incident.
As the investigation into James's motive and the possibility of preventing the attacks unfolds, authorities are particularly examining why the former US Army officer engaged in a series of assaults resulting in six fatalities and three injuries in the vicinity of San Antonio and Austin. He is also believed to have killed his parents in the San Antonio area, according to authorities. Police identified his parents as Shane James Sr, 56, and Phyllis James, 55.
It is also being examined whether preventative measures could have been taken, considering he had an active arrest warrant related to an incident from early 2022.
James is currently facing pre-indictment charges of capital murder of multiple persons and capital murder by terror threat/other felony, both of which carry the potential penalty of death. A hearing is scheduled for January 18, as per nbc news.
Shane James breaks into a house, shoots two women
According to a recently disclosed probable cause affidavit, a harrowing incident in Austin unfolded before 7 pm local time on Tuesday.
A resident, monitoring his home through a live surveillance system, urgently contacted 911, reporting a break-in at his residence on Austral Loop in the southwest part of the city.
Upon arriving at the scene, detectives encountered Shane James, who, upon confrontation, opened fire, injuring a detective.
Subsequently, James reportedly stole a car from the residence and fled the scene at high speed, as detailed in the affidavit obtained by NBC affiliate WOAI-TV in San Antonio.
Upon reviewing security footage, a detective observed James kicking down a back door of the residence while armed with an Inland Manufacturing 1911 A1 .45-caliber pistol, according to the affidavit.
Inside the home, police discovered two women with gunshot wounds, identified as Katherine Short, 56, and Lauren Short, 30.
Despite attempts at revival, both women were pronounced dead at the scene at 7.30 pm, court records indicated. The man who alerted 911 identified them as his wife and a daughter with "special needs".
Following the incident, James led police on a pursuit, reaching speeds of up to 90 mph, before being apprehended after crashing the stolen Acura.
The affidavit noted the discovery of a pistol and handgun magazines on James. Additionally, a search warrant obtained by WOAI-TV revealed Austin police's intention to collect DNA samples from James related to the Austral Loop home invasion, per nbc.
