Shaquille Taylor: Man charged with murder in stray-bullet death of NJ college student Jillian Ludwig
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Shaquille Taylor, 29, faces a murder charge after allegedly fatally shooting Belmont University freshman Jillian Ludwig in 2023.
The Nashville District Attorney's Office confirmed the indictment on Tuesday, March 19, marking a significant development in the case.
Insights into the fatal shooting of Jillian Ludwig
Jillian Ludwig, an 18-year-old student from New Jersey, was tragically struck in the head by a stray bullet in a park near campus on November 7, 2023. Despite being rushed to the hospital in critical condition, she succumbed to her injuries later that day.
According to authorities, Taylor has been accused of firing multiple rounds toward a dark sedan fleeing the area, with one of the shots inadvertently hitting Ludwig. His girlfriend reportedly informed Nashville police that Taylor confessed to his involvement in the shooting.
Shaquille Taylor's prior criminal history
This indictment follows a prior arrest of Taylor for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in April 2023. However, he was deemed incompetent to stand trial by court-appointed doctors, leading to his release from custody.
According to court documents, physicians determined that Taylor has an intellectual disability and language impairment. Following his release, the tragic shooting of Ludwig sparked public outrage and compelled Tennessee lawmakers to reassess state legislation.
After her death, Ludwig’s family fondly remembered her as a "radiant and talented young woman" who showcased her musical talents on bass and guitar and sang at various venues in her hometown of Wall Township in the Garden State. Her obituary described Jillian as 'full of enthusiasm, compassion, and love," the New York Post reported.
“Her music, service, and positive attitude made the world a better place. In her short 18 years, Jillian made a remarkable impact on countless people and her spirit will continue to bring light to the world," the obituary further read.
In response to the incident, legislation is currently under consideration in the state legislature to facilitate the commitment of individuals unfit to stand trial due to mental health issues.
As Taylor faces new charges, a competency hearing is scheduled in the upcoming weeks. Prosecutors express optimism for a more favorable outcome this time.
